high pitch noise at high rpm?
03/04/10 at 17:32:31
whenever my bike reaches the high rpm range, right before i shift, i get a high pitched whinning noise. i shift fairly conservatively so it's not like i'm redlining it or anything. Also i hear this noise chirp for a second when i hit a bump cruising at an rpm just below where i would here it normally. lastly, if i am running at a constant high rpm such as trying to listen to this noise, i also here a sort of clicking sound which seems to be coming from the engine but not real sure on it's whereabouts. any ideas or experiences?

very likely both sounds are the drivebelt chirpping,... It's normal...
It'll happen more often in wet and cold...
If it bothers you, you can try some beeswax, chainwax, wd-40, but it will come back... You can also try loosening the belt a little...
but basically there's nothing wrong...
Don't worry about it...
The clicking could be camchain if the bike has 15 or 20k + miles... if the bike is new, it's the belt...

Next time you hear the high pitch noise try putting your hand on the speedo. The mounts sometimes make a high pitch noise.

cool, good to know. the bike only has 1000 miles but it is a 2002 that i just picked up so it's not in the condition that a bike with 1000 miles should be in.

i had to remove it to shift though Grin
Why? Clutchless shifting is fine on this thing except for the 1/2 or 2/1 shifts.

Bzzzt!,..Ouch!... (hey!...that hurt!...)... I got it wrong...
If you want to fix the speedo squeal,.. pull the tank,.. and squirt silicone gasket sealant around the three springs that are under the speedo mounting screws... no more squealies!...

You'll see what I did to stop the infernal speedo squeal.....and it's still working great for me!
