Newbie Question on Filling Gas Tank
03/04/10 at 15:16:45

Just got my 2001 Savage.  Everytime I fill the tank, drive a short distance, then park, it starts dripping gas out of some hose.  What's the deal?  AND the petcock has no OFF position - what's with that?  BTW, this is a california model.

The stock petcock is a vacuum operated one. RES, ON, PRI. PRI=Prime. When in On or Res, it takes vacuum to create fuel flow. Prime is strictly gravity and is only used to fill the bowl after it has been sitting for a while or after carb work. When the engine is shut off, if petcock is in the on or res position, there will be no fuel flow unless the vac diaphragm is messed up.

Fill the tank only up to the filler neck and fill it with the bike in the upright position... any more than that, and it will overflow...
With that amount, you can go 100 or more miles before reserve... best to refill every 100 miles to be safe...

The gas needs some room to expand and slosh around... Wink

What Yonuh said for the petcock...

I would think you would get more gas in it in a upright position.

You have a problem.  I have put 2.93 gallons of gas into my 2000 California model with no leakage.

The California gas tank and cap are different.  Others vent via the cap, our cap does not vent and we have a vent on the inside frame tunnel area with a hose to a vapor recovery thingie. (and thence to the carb or air box??)

perhaps someone pulled the vent line off and left it loose.
have a look around for a similar hose around the top of the carb or airbox.

I've never had a gas cap leak on many different bikes.

Thanks for everyone's feedback.  Guess I need to have a look around the tank and carb.
