What I was wondering is,....for a bike that runs low on steam long about 80 in 5th gear, whats it going to do with even taller gears ?

I myself like havin a little throttle left over when I'm cruzin 60 in 5th.

I bought the tach for just that reason. I couldn't tell if I was in 4th or 5th. Turns out the only difference is 300 rpm.  Sad Not much of a gas saver.

The overdrive in my car drops the RPMs by only about a hundred, so 5th gear in the Savage is kinda like a tall overdrive.

DO NOT BUY FROM THAT SELLER!!!

Sorry, but it has been posted time and time again that flightsimshop is a cheat. Stay away from that seller as much as you can.

Ya beat me to it! Grin  I was going to post the same warning.

It can make interesting reading sometimes checking all his negative feedback, and his oh so polite (can ya sense the sarcasm? Cheesy) responses. Grin

I had a GR650 Suzuki geared a 1000 rpm lower than stock,Put 28000 miles on it that way with know problems,Pulled good from 40mph in high year,Best mpg was 68 on a trip.Sure wished I could do that with my S40 but I like the belt drive.Very relaxed at 70 mph.

Most every bike I've had incl this one was geared about right for all around riding. If different riding conditions warrant ratio changes, then that what you do. The only one I ever remember changing was a 750 Atlas that I used to 1/4 mile drag, lower gear, but then I couldn't keep it on the ground ! Shocked

Bill,
I would never want to. Low gear is too high now. I'm constantly having to working the clutch in low speed traffic.

And when you're short on hp for hi speeds, you don't gear higher!
But I have stuck a piston before from running too tall gears, and that was after bigger main jets. My s-40 is not spinning too fast at 50-55 by any means, which is about the max speed I normally ride. If yours is, then change the gears to chain.
Are you sure you have a 5 speed, or is it going into 5th gear ?
I've read where many s-40's change to lower gears to pick up top speed.

Me,....I need a tac-o-meter ! Smiley

I think about 90% of the riders on here wished their S40s were geared lower so they wouldn't have to slip the clutch,And would have more top speed Roll Eyes

On KLX I've raised the final drive from 15/43 to 16/42 (9.2%) and it's much more relaxed, plus she now does 60 in second.

Your right Bill

I had a Kawasaki 750 LTD , factory gearing redlined 5th at 112 mph

I change it to redline 5th at 145 mph , it would not do it but 80 mph cruise sure got nice.

If I wanted to "#@%^ VIBRATE ^%@#" I could allways leave it in 4th.

Same I did with a Honda CB-1. A few teeth smaller rear sprocket did the trick.
