What Kind of Mileage Do You Get?
02/25/10 at 10:19:55

Just got a 2001 LS 650.  I get 45 - 50 mpg.  I think that's a little low.  Wondering what MPG others are getting.

Unless you have considerably more sophisticated equipment than usual, you have to take a sort of average over one or more tanks. To begin, fill the tank and write down the mileage. When you refill the tank, write down the mileage and the fuel quantity. Subtract the starting mileage from the ending mileage, then divide by the quantity. It is an average because it also includes idling time, start-up with the enrichener, acceleration and deceleration as well as cruise.

There are at least a couple of error sources. One is odometer error. If your odometer is not accurate your distance traveled isn't accurate either. Another is tank filling error. If you don't fill the tank exactly the same each time you can introduce quantity errors. These will usually average out over several tanks. If the bike sits for a long time between rides some fuel can evaporate out, although it isn't likely to be a significant amount.

To calculate my MPG, I use the method described by Charon.  However, I believe my odometer is not accurate.  Several cars odometers show my home to work mileage as 18, while my 650 shows 13.  A pretty big difference.

I use to get 45'ish city and 52'ish Highway if I rode easy.

Playing around & showing off, it went down to 38 & 48..... but it was fun  Grin

... Huh ...

I puts one gallon in... rides 'till I runs out... walks back, gets the car with the trip meter, and drives back to the bike...

Usually 60 miles,...on a good day...
Sometimes a little more... on other days... Huh

Best I ever got was 140 miles from standard tank full. Was running on fumes when I pulled in to gas up. Couldn't even see a little puddle at the bottom. That was all back road riding the twisties and the long straights.

Average town driving get me close to 50 mpg give or take 5

Mine falls into the 45-50 mpg range Sad

My bike does set for weeks at times between rides.
Tires are not stock size.
I ride for fun more than transportation, so I tend to use the posted speedlimit as a min. speed. I like fast peg draggin' thrill rides that are not the best for mileage Grin Grin Grin Grin
Also I run a windshield, hard bags, and feet up on the crashbar pegs when on straight high speed roads, not the best streamlined ride Grin

i get 42-47 around town doing fast accel. But Im running a 16in rear wheel with a 16/43 chain combo so Im actually getting at least 45mpg. Assuming a 10% difference about 46-52. On the highway at 60mph (indicated) I usually get about 60mpg (again assuming a 10% difference its actually 66mpg)
