Hi all, I'm hoping for some input on mods I'm considering.

I live at 1 mile high, bike runs well but pops between shifts after going with 1/2 spacer 2 1/2 turns out on air screw and installing aftermarket exhaust (does have baffles but really open just the same).
Haven't rejetted yet but plan to try with 52.5 pilot with bleed holes and possibly 150 main.

1) K&N drop in filter - worth it? really better? don't want to start an air filter war just wondering about everyones personal experience...

2) 140/90-15 tire for rear. will I need to get new shocks? how is clearance? If 140/80-15 works better I'll stick with that but metzlers are kind pricey...

3)Fork Brace - does it really help? bike feels kinda light when I get up to about 70...will this help? thinking of a superbrace but again kinda pricey...

Any input is welcome.

I think the K&N drop-in is a good filter just by virtue of being reusable.  It probably filters as well or better than the stock filter, which looks kind of loose weave.. almost see-through. The owner's manual says the paper filter is reusable too, by blowing it out with compressed air.  Surely they're joking.

Search around or ask "Oldfeller" how big a tire you can mount.

A fork brace will definitely get rid of that squirmy feel, if that's what you mean.  

I'd do the filter/pipe/jetting before anything else so your bike no longer runs hot.  Get a variety of jets from JetsRus so you only pay for shipping once.. good luck.

"I live at 1 mile high, bike runs well but pops between shifts"  The only time I had popping between shifts is when the header was loose.  But I have a supertrapp and it has to be seriously lean to get it to pop.  Also could be you have the idle speed set too low and the idle mixture too high.

"1) K&N drop in filter" I liked it, gave a few miles to the top end.

"2) 140/90-15 tire for rear."  fine as is.  But you need to check.  I've noticed on the '88 that the fender isn't centered on the tire.  Could be bent.  But the '96 was centered.  Neither have a rubbing issue.

"3)Fork Brace"  get one, don't even question it, really.  TKAT makes one for about $90  and with a little polish looks fine.  or the super brace, it'll really improve the feel of the bike.  I got one for the '96 and rode it at least for a year before I got the '88.  Ridin' that around for the 1st time, felt like I was going to fall over.

the fork brace and the Ed. L forward controls are the best first mods u can make. it will improve your riding a lot!

I've been riding on a 140/90-15 since late last summer, and no problems, but it did rub slightly on one of the bolts holding the side rails on, so you will need to check for clearance there.

  I have the super brace it is good,But it doesn't help the from end from being too light,One of my biggest dislikes of the S40 is the front end is to light,thats why it doesn't feel stable at higher speeds,compared to any other bikes I've had. My wifes 1980 Suzuki GN 400 was more stable.

I love the superbrace.  It made a very noticeable difference at highway speeds.

More costly:
Ed L.'s forward controls, fork brace, saddlebags

Not bad cost:
K&N filter, muffler, handlebar swap, front brake pads upgrade

Low cost:
Carb jets, seat mod, headlight bulb upgrade

Thanks everyone, it appears that everyone likes the K&N mod so I think that's a go.
I already have Lancers jetset so I'm ready to dink around with that and see if I can get the "pop" to stop before I go for the filter.

Definately need the tires by springtime...I'm running the original IRC's at about 7600 miles. I really lucked out on this bike. I think the PO totally babied it...

Fork brace...maybe for my birthday... Smiley

Don't forget to do your mods one at a time, if they could conflict with each other.  Its easier to figure out what went wrong if you only change one thing at a time.
