Mileage or little ticking sound that set the hairs on the back of my neck crawling.  The ticking is caused by the tensioner wrapping on the clutch case in morse code "Can you hear me now?"

I recomend checking every 5k miles, the procedure is in the tect section.

BTW: you don't adjust the tensioner, it does it by itself.  And replacing it does no good either.  It's the chain and guides that wear.

Preventive medicine is to go pull the cover and LOOK at it.

& measure it so YOu can have a guess at when its gonna be time. Kind of a drag to pull it apart to replace the chain & find the tensioner at 15 mm. YOu can decide to put it back together & ride a while or go ahead & replace it early.I wouldnt open the thing up w/o a cam chain in my hand, unless it was clearly time to look inside & see if it should just be parked till a chain showed up. IOW, you KNOW its gonna take a chain, so why not get one? & a gasket & sealer. Might as well get ready for the job, cuz if you ride a Savage, the day is coming when it gets a new cam chain.

& soak that chain in oil a while, so the pins are well lubed at startup.

I recommend looking at it every 5k, as in beginning with 5k.
Some have failed at 8k.  Otherwise train your ankles to listen for strange noises.

I replaced mine at 15,000. The tensioner was at 18 mm. The chain measured "Good" for quite a while longer. Someone made a chart of replaced chains & at what mileage & the measurement & estimated how many miles it should have gone on & been okay. The chain on mine was okay for (IIRC) another 5 - 8 K, but the guides had failed to hold it in ( RPM related? Most likely, IMO.) & had allowed the tensioner to extend to a degree that would make letting it Pop Loose & or wear the tensioner opening into an oval, so I just stuck a new one in. Ill have a look at it in another 5 or so K. I wont go to 15 with it, since I know the guides are old. I will go to 10 & then start looking for a good time to open it up. I dont think it could fail in just 5, but then, Ive been surprised before..
