CLUTCH CABLE
12/23/09 at 13:52:31

Just got back from a pretty long ride through the mountains here and noticed it was getting harder and harder to change gears.  When I pulled into the house, I took a look and noticed the clutch cable was hanging on by one of the several strands that make the cable.  Can you tell me if there is a way to attach the cables again or do I need to replace the whole cable?

BTW - the gravel they use here when the roads ice make it worse than driving on a dirt road.

I would replace the cable, it's not that expensive.  Tie/tape a string to the old, pull the cable out while pulling the string into it's place.  Tie the new cable to the string, pull it back in.  No need to remove anything.  (unless the little bend over keeper-in-position tabs are too tight -- but it's worth a try!)

Somewhere there is a thread about oiling the clutch and brake cables.  Rubberband a ziplock baggie to the top ends and put in some oil.  Tie them up and let the oil run down the inside of the cables. It really does make a difference.

oiling wont do much with a nearly snapped cable. Id replace it and oil it with heavy oil right away then again every spring. Theyre only about $15.

Well, someone apparently dont know beans about OIL. You use the Right oil & it'll FIX them little busted wires in the cable & it'll be Good as NEW.

I figured Seafoam to fix it, Klotz to keep it from happening again.
