How hard to replace fork seals?
12/20/09 at 07:14:58

The Savage be leaking a little and I know the seals are shot.  So, how hard is it to do.  I've done lots of engine work but NO fork work...

Plus I want to put fork boots on too.

Personally, I'd probably remove the fork legs and take them to the dealer. Let him replace the seals. Then, when you get them back, make sure they have the right type and amount of oil. You have to remove the fork legs anyway to install the fork boots, so on reinstallation you just add the boots.

I "helped" replace the fork seals in mine right after I got it.  It was not too hard a job.  I'm sure you can do it.

clymers calls for a special tool which was my undoing. Theres directions on making it and doing the seal replacement but i couldnt getit to work. I ended up prying my leaky oil seal out with a small screwdriver in desperation. I wouldnt do that again.

Savagewahine pulled it off, but then she was pretty much able to do anything it seemed. Miss that gal, but she seemed to have such a busy life, she didnt have time to talk about what all she was doing, she was too busy Doing.

Im loosely considering a springer front end for that reason but have more measuring (and saving) to do. Plus I really want to keep my cast wheels and the metric vs standard axle is an issue.

It's easily, you can do it in a day with many interuptions.

The secret to the tool...
Start with the unaltered broom stick.
Jam it down there and see how it feels.
Try the bolt, if it don't work take it out and cut a taper like a pencil.
Try again and keep cutting the taper longer until it works.
I don't think you'll have a problem, you have a way of making it work.

The broomstick idea is exactly what i did except that when I finally got it to fit the bolt was so tight that turning it stripped the broom tool.
