Smokin Leak
12/09/09 at 19:54:40

My savage has an oil leak somewhere on the top of the cylinder. Some people have recommended a head gasket change. Others have told me not to bother because Savage leaks cant be cured. Before I attempt this repair, does anyone have any recommendations or wisdom?

it's probably the head cap like mine, if it's wet out the header wrap smokes, just painted the engine, that smokes. when they are both dry the leak smokes =]

i'm giving smokey the bear heart attacks lol

Typically it's the dreaded head plug leak, requires removing the head cover.
But can be the head gasket, especially if you haven't torqued the head bolts lately.  Try tightening the 2 nuts in front and back of the cylinder half way up.

or it can be any one of several of the head cover bolts, try tightening them.  Not to tight, they only take about 8 ftlbs.

I just fixed a leak that I thought was the head plug, but once I got the covers off I found out it was the front valve adjustment cover. The leaking oil was blowing around the right side, past the plug and down the back. Real easy fix.  Smiley
