serowbot, i didn't even notice the oil! loL!!! my friend who is obsessive over cleaning his sportster asked me if the oil everywhere bothered me, i responded "only when it gets on my pants" ahaha

and thanks guys, i am really diggin it, the left side is rubbing off a little bit from where my heel hits when i shift, luckily she's nasty!

and i am totally into the black and whites, i want to find an old bar or some old wooden fence to have in the background.

a guy came into the restaurant where i had my bike parked right out front, he's got an xs650, and a vulcan. both are hardtails, all bobbed out, all his work in the backyard, flat black rattle can. he really liked my bike, and was shocked it was a single 650! he said he's tired of seeing "clean and cookie cutter" bikes, and he asked if i'd ever sell her.

only if i get another savage lol! or a kz1000 that i can turn into a drag bike  Grin

This is funny, cos most xs650's are bobbed ... the rest are cafe'd or flat tracker'ed. Cookie cutter doesn't even begin to describe that en mass movement. Its worse than the harleys.
In charlotte in craigslist there is 2 hard tailed xs650's for sale.
There are 4-5 weld in hard tail kits for the XS available right form 200 bucks. Its the most over done mod IMHO.
A unique XS will ironically have to be all stock.
Now the pre 76-77 ones have some collector value, and heck they even look 1/2 decent. So leaving those stock - fairly common. Post 78 and the ones designated "special" were fugly and ended up hacked some way or other. That being stock is truly rare.

Anyway I am re-building a special to stock functionality, then depending on my customer, I may lightly shave and mod the seat and pass it off to the guy. If he bails I would definetly mod it with mono shock, katana front end and fit my rephased motor in it.
That would be slightly unique. Mono shock is still un common in the xs world. Kat front end ... well FZR ones have been done before.
Cool.

i took a wire wheel and just grinded the crap out of it! i redid it today(gas takes off clear coat, thus rust) and i put some zig zags in it. it looks pretty sweet actually. i also drilled 3 little holes through my muffler "guard" and painted it flat black, i really like how it came out.

srinath, i didn't know they were that common! maybe that's why he was so interested in my thumper....hmmm i may have converted him!!

XS itself is rather rare. But hard tail bobber XS's especially the 80 and later specials are common as snot.
I have had 2 so far, both came to me without me even looking for one. The bikes are solid, but of course they die from other stuff, like electronic or other glitches or crashed or rusted etc.

I guess they are just about as common as anythng made in the 70's 80's.
Cool.

i like the looks of the double muffler, but that's about it.

so to make it a hardtail, they weld a new back on? or u could put metal bars or something in place of the shocks right?

Sweet.  Lots of attitude.  Try sliding your front turn signals uu about 3-4 inches.  Visually, it maked the front forks look longer.  Any higher than that and the turns will hit the tank at max turn.
