I have no idea how much force I am subjecting the shifter to. I am not trying to bend anything, but I am quick & decisive & when I decide its time to shift, Im not kidding around. Thats USUALLY,, sometimes it may take 2 seconds to get a shift, because Im just Ho Hummin' along. I almost never have a shifting problem. Sometimes it will jump out of 2nd a sec or 2 after I made the shift, but Im pretty sure thats my fault. Diddle with the adjustment, but yea, mark it first. Check the slack in the clutch lever. Cant hurt to have a look at that. channge the way you work the gas a bit, mess around & look for a way to make it work out. Then tell it here, maybe that would be a good clue & someone could tell you how to make it work better.
