Getting gas everywhere when filling
11/03/09 at 17:50:14
Good Day All,
My wife seems to have a problem with filling the bike, every time she gets gas everywhere, some even in the tank, but mostly spilling over the tank. I am not too helpful either as I am not used to that style of tank and get it everywhere also. Any special hints? Has anyone seen guard for the tank to protect the pretty pink paint?
Thanks!

poke the nozzle down IN the tank, dont try to squirt it in. W/O squirting gas, use the nozzle to find the lower edge of the metal sleeve under the cap/neck. Hold the end of the nozzle down that far in the tank & youll get it about as full as it is supposed to be.

That could be it... if you don't get the nozzle in far enough, when the gas goes in, air will come out and blow some gas with it.
Personally, never had a problem, just stick the nozzle in as far as it will go. Pretty pink girls like it like that.

Sneak the nozzle beside the tank, upside-down. Then arc it up around and down in, that way any gas in the hose won't spill out on the tank.
Do the same when you pull it out, this works real well. I learned that years ago while driving big Peterbuilts with fancy polished tanks.
Could go all week without polishing the aluminum....

dispense the gas slowly. Don't just pull the handle like you're filling up your car. Don't try to top it off. Just fill it to right below the neck.

Slow and steady wins the race, some paper towels helps also.

and "burp" it after filling up. Before putting on the cap, tip the bike to vertical then put it back on the kick stand, then put on the cap.
Not doing so could cause trapped air to spit gas out the cap vents.. especially if you put in a wee bit too much gas.

Most motorcycle problems are caused by the nut between the seat and the handlebars. Make sure yours isn't too tight or too loose.

Flashlight helps. I look in with the flash and can see the gas level easily. A flashlight on the bike is a great safety device in general.

But sometimes the nozzle is just too long!

Yep, that can be a problem. Just have to be careful not to make a big mess. Keep towels handy.... But too long is still better than too short! If its too short, you can fill the tank too full, and that could be disastrous!
