Good winter/cool riding gear?

I'm in an area of texas where snow and ice probably aren't an issue, but it does get cold occasionally and even at 50 degrees my drive is at 60 mph for 40 minutes, so by the end I'm freaking cold! last night I had to stop for 5-10 minutes to warm back up before continuing my trip, I have a good jacket with a liner that I just didn't want to put in last night, with that liner I woulda been just fine, just being lazy. But my legs were a bit chilly. Does anyone have any good suggestions for windbreaker/cold riding gear pants that could go over normal clothing. My jacket does have a zipper in the back for attachment to pants. Just wondering if there are any brands or products I should avoid.

How about long underwear....I have ridden down to 18 degrees with chaps, regular pants/jeans and long undies.

Reply #3 - 11/03/09 at 09:27:02 im a snowboarder as well and would def. recommend snow gear: they are usually water and wind proof, and warm. check out any outdoor gear place - hudson outfitters, dicks sports, or sports authority.

I am in the process of purchasing lined fleece jeans to add to my fall and winter riding gear. I don't ride in weather under 38 degrees either.

Try this...its cheap!
Wet a hand towel, fold it, wrap it in a zip lock baggie, and place it in the microwave for a few seconds. Drape it around your shirt collar under your jacket and go for a ride. Your hands, your neck, your head, even your groin feels much warmer. I find that it is still warm after 20-30 minutes, and when it starts to cool, it's another 30 seconds in the microwave. Try it before you buy heated grips.

Black Goretex pants with Thinsulate, got em from Cabella's. Nice warm NFL jacket (Steelers). Ski type face mask. River Road insulated gloves, or ski mittens if it's really cold.

don't wanna spend more than that and it doesn't get all that cold here, so with that and some long underwear I think I'd be okay, they probably aren't all that warm and I'm suspect of their quality for some reason, don't know why though

I have chaps that fit me when Im just wearing jeans & some bigger ones that go over the insulated coveralls I got at Wally World. I sewed vinyl over the upper torso of them to stop the wind. All the way down to the thighs. Layers & wind proofing, thats the thing. A balaclava that goes down enough to cover the neck, even just a tee shirt, cut & sewn to fit, makes a huge difference in misery levels. Wool socks made a big difference. A Korean war vet gave me a pair he had left over from that time he was there.
I have some little chemical foot warmers to drop in the boots Im gonna try. Got them at Lowes, I think. Ive made a 4o mile( one way, I had to go back home in it, too) trip, no faring, highway speeds for parts of it at below 40 degrees & not been in pain. Be a lie to say it was "fun" in the classical sense. It WAS kinda fun to know I had the right clothes for so little $$$ to ALLOW me to make that run.
IF you are caught out & getting cold, stop & grab some newspapers & stuff your shirt & anything else. Then you better stay dry or youll be a paper mache' Michellin man.
