If ordering on line, you can go old school wet acid with the "stock" battery in either terminal position for $29.95 from these folks.

========  this is supposedly the rare "right one"  =========

========  this is the commonly available "Walmart" one =========

Durned if they don't look wrong to me too.  Those pictures don't seem to match the product listing, do they?

Here is a pic of a stock YB14L-A2 Yuasha battery from Bob's for comparison.  Bob's is listing the alternate configuration as "the battery" now.

http://www.bobscycle.com/browse.cfm/4,19597.htm

=============

Bill, if you want the reversed pole position they sell that one too for the same price.  I think you need to watch out for the pictures though, I am not sure but that they don't use the same pic for a lot of different designations as these terminals didn't move left right either.

The CB prefix number on the battery doesn't seem to match the YB product listing either.  It does give the suffix as A-2 though.  Do you think maybe some generic substitution is going on at the wholesale level also?  Or is that a manufacturer specific part number instead of the Yuasha system number?

http://www.batteryxpress.com/store/scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=95

The A-2 or the B-2 is the crux of the old Yuasha style designation for the lead acids as far as flipping the terminals front/back right/left.

I think these guys have the correct battery for any Yuasha battery designation at a very reasonable $29.95 price.  I would just type in the whole and correct battery number into the search box and it will show you all the competitive brand names and prices.

Perhaps this is a sign of our battery future -- if you lengthen your cables a bit you can digest whatever the current generic lead acid battery comes in looking like.  If you have to get the exact terminal configuration you used to get, use the full battery designation and cross your fingers that there hasn't been a substitution done by the vendor chain.

=================

With the influx of sealed batteries running under the manufacturer's own designation systems, the old wet acid "habit" of always listing batteries under the Yuasha designation system seems to be breaking down industry wide.

Go net looking for an LS650 battery now days won't even yield the "generic" battery type number listing any more, just that particular manufacturer's number.

=================

Battery prices are getting right shocking too.  Last battery I bought was $14.95 shipped dry with an acid pack in the box.  I kept it around for a while before using it, but shipped dry & stored indoors a battery has nearly infinite storage life.  I saw some for $95 this time around (shudder).  $29.95 seems to be the best price around right now.

Your next battery will likely cost a lot more.

The Koyo 14 LB2 is the right battery.
The drain has to be on the right with the negative on the left, positive on the right toward the rear of the bike.
A sealed one dont have a drain.
Cool.

I bought the KOYO for my wife's S40. Got battery acid at interstate battery for $1.99 Careful with filling it, always follow instructions.
Worked like a champ, and was the least expensive way to go (for a stock fit), but had to wait 2 days to get the battery.

If you're stranded look at sears, batterysplus, and Oriley's autoparts  for an AGM or standard that'll fit. Other stores like autozone, CSK, Walmart and the like should have the LA2 in stock for like $20-$40 but it'll need to be rigged.

I wish this post was up when I was looking for a stock fit battery. The Koyo from batteryexpress took me a day of scouring the internet to find that deal!  Grin

Guys, thanks so much for the replies. I was afraid there wouldn't be a drop in replacement, but I was hoping. Still, with the suggested mods by Oldfeller, I could drop in just about any battery. Thanks again everybody.

I modded mine. I bent a 7inch X 12 inch piece of stainless 16 guage perforated sheet metal which had 1/4 inch holes into a channel shape. Then I welded up a 4 inch X 3 inch end plate on the left side. Right side can be closed with a zip tie or make a bolt with a L shape head. Or a hook shape.
Cool.

A bud was prepping for the 1st race of the spring. The old 12V batt. in the trailer was run down & dead so he trotted out the charger and charged it all night. It took him along time to figure out why the wench operated backwards. Yup, he had the black & red crossed and charged the battery back to reverse polarity.
