Sure, no problem.  Just take as much weight off the rear wheel as possible, then get a screwdriver or something that will just barely stick into the small hole in the adjustment cam just below the spring.  Turn the cam (around the axis of the  shock) and you'll feel it click into one of the 5 positions.  You should also see the location of bottom of the spring changing as the preload changes.

If you run into any problems, let me know.. I happen to have my shocks off the bike (and for sale, in case you muck up yours  Grin ) and can easily take photos of what I mean.

in the lower chrome cover, there's a hole.
stick the largest pin, allen wrench or screwdriver in there and turn the appropriate number of knotches.
both side have to be the same.
it's actually easier to remove the shock from the bike, place the bottom mount on the top mounting bolt and turn it that way.
replace it after adjusting one side.

You don't take shock off to adjust it. That would be silly.

If I removed them every time I changed the preload I would never get to ride.

Actually with my Progressive shocks I did just that.. UUHhhHhnn!  But apparently I lack the Kung-Fu grip so I had to grab it with a piece of rubber.

The adjustment sets the preload to minimize the chance of bottoming out or topping out over bumps.  It changes nothing else, not the spring tension nor the damping.

Does anyone know the range of the stroke of the shocks?

The preload should be about 25% to 33% of the full range of the suspension with the load on the bike...rider in full gear with luggage or passenger.  If the shock has, say, 100 mm of travel, you'd want the bike's back end to sag 25 to 33 mm when you sit on it, upright, ready to ride.

The spring pre load doesn't change the spring tension or damping but it does have and effect on both of them.
