Serowbot is right, first see if it is the belt.  I used garage door silicone lubricant (doesn't attract grit).  The noise went immediately - so it was the belt; noise came chirping back after 5 miles.  I then carefully aligned the rear wheel and sprayed the belt with Du Pont teflon multi-use dry, wax lubricant (recommended on a Kawa site as they have this problem with belt driven Vulcans).  Cured chirp for about 100 miles when it came back a little for the first few miles each ride, but has now almost totally gone 500 miles later.

hello everyone!
my 2007 S40 recently started to make what sounds like metal on metal  noise. it occurs and continues when i start riding, when the bike is idling the engine runs fine, but once i start moving there comes that screeching sound which gets louder as i accelerate, then it goes down a tiny bit. i checked the belt tension, seems to be ok, oil level is fine too. i have no idea what it is and probably will have to take the bike to the dealer, which i hate to do. any suggestions?

This is probably too late, but if nothing else works, check to see that the speedometer cable is not dry.

A dry speedo cable spinning in a dry sheath can make a helluva racket.

these bikes seem to be really noisy. belt, speedo, headlight, i even had the rear brake squeal a few times. drives me nuts. i have taken care of most of it, unless i ride at over 70 for very long then it buzzes me to death lol.

That must be why fools put on loud exhaust systems. They cover up the other noises.

I bought some small blocks of bees wax on eBay. I rub it on my belt and it stays noise free 600-700 miles.
