Now that I got the outside of the engine clean, I'm working on the inside.
I found that acetone dissolves this crap.  So that and a toothbrush I've gotten the insides of the side covers clean.

You guys know if acetone harms any thing in the engine?

It seems whatever he used as a sealant dissolves in oil.  Stick to the tried and true my friends, I may have to split the case to get this clean yet.
I think the clutch is toast the way this gunk sticks to everything.
Next step is to clean the head cover, then I'll put in new gaskets, seal it up put in OF cleaning oil and Bill's fixall... Rotella and seafoam.

Acetone dissolves toothbrushes and that may leave a plastic scum in little nooks and crannies.  If using acetone, I would scrub with a piece of wool cloth as it will not dissolve.

It had an old style head plug in it.  These are the kind that are basically a rubber coated steel shell.  The steel shell was eating the head cover.

I thinking of putting a aluminum plug in with a high temp O-ring.

But it means experimenting with someone elses bike.

Why not.  It's internal, he'll never know.

You got that crap inside the oil passages, etc.  If oil dissolved it and moved it there then Rotella can likely get it back out again over time.  Put the owner on a white jug fast change routine for six months to a year and you will have done everything you can to get it all out.

Acetone soak the fiber and steel plates, if the gunk comes off the clutch is "saved".  Ask him if he had any slippage -- the gunk may have acted to increase friction rather than lessen it.  If he had no slippage, leave it alone for the Rotella to clean up, don't even take it apart.  Friction and Rotella will clean the steel plates and keep the new fiber that is exposed from normal wear clean.

I don't want to put that crap encrusted clutch back in there.
And I have a couple of used clutches I can use instead.

BTW, straight seafoam cleaned it too.
