LED fuel gauge (for savage?)
10/13/09 at 13:16:40

For those of you who are still annoyed at having to remember
to gas up every 100miles here is a possible solution for our
bikes, a friend of mine bought a used harley that came with
a neat LED tankcap/fuel gauge, so he does not know where
to buy it but it works like this:

You stick it in the gas tank and screw it put (in this bike w/2
holes in it's tank, the right cap is the actual fuel cap and the
left one is the gauge) the thing has these sensors inside (a
float mechanism maybe?) that tells you from 1 to 6 how much
gas you have left by lighting LED lights on the skull's teeth
(see pictures), the first one is red (reserve) and the rest are
blue, works fine, lit 2 blue ones when I straightened the bike
upright; very nice but pricey I'm sure since it may well be an
original harley accessory and the tank may need to be adapted
for use in the savage, well now you know they exist.

Anyone has anything similar installed? (apart from our lock/tripmeters ) Grin

+1  Agreed.

...but that's what the harley crowd seems to like, whatchagonnado?!  Cheesy

Anyway, what I would do if I had an extra tank, the right
tools, materials and interest in really doing it would be to slash
a 1" cut in our tanks that runs from somewhere close to the
bottom to the top close to there the cap is and then place a
window there made of thick glass or plexiglass or something
the gas won't eat through and seal it with some marine-tex or
something and there you have it, a see-through window fuel
gauge for the savage (or run an outside clear tube of some
sort from bottom to top to see the tank's level) now THAT
would be cool!

So there, there is my million dollar idea, any volunteers for the savage prototype?

I have an old John Deere tractor that has a fuel gauge in the cap. It would be easy to weld the neck to the gas tank of the 650. I just like the tractor to much to do it. I'll just keep on dialing my lock.

I work as a marine engineer and I have nevere seen a tank fitting that didn't eventually leak.  Yes some of them took many years to leak but they did leak in the end.  The amount of vibration that sight glass would endure would get it leaking quick.  It does look good though.   Wink

Ok, but at the same time if a person was to T into the petcock w/ a clear plastic line, and run it along the bottom of the fuel tank and where ??up into the headlight ? Then stick a carb jet w/ the smallest hole in the end of the hose ?
There, now you have a visual fuel gauge.

a buddy of mine has a clear tube sticking out of his tank like the one above and it is SICK!!! i'd totally get it done 2 mine, except it costs 100 bucks. which is perfectly ok since his is a big old custom. if i can't make mine or zip tie something...i don't want it  Tongue

I checked out the featured gage, only works if you have as tank with a built in sensor.

Siometimes I forget when I filled up last. But, if Im going for a ride, I have my keys "Right THERE", ya know? So, I know it's kinda radical, but here's what I do.. I Pop the gas cap OFF & Peek down in yonda. If I think I can ride a while, I do, if I figure I should just go on & fill up so my fun isnt interrupted, then I do that. Once Im "Out there" & have an idea how much gas I have, Im happy, but I dont like wondering if its about to cut out as I slow for a corner.

Yep, I always look in the tank before a ride and fill-up if it is more than a 1/4 low. Only once had to fill-up during a ride [not often we go more than 125 mi. on the isle!]

The fuel gauge shown is a receiving unit, there needs to be a transmitter of some sort in the tank, and the Savage doesn't have one. Oh, besides the skull with teeth, you can have plain dome, HD emblem, Cross, Sixshooter, Flames and maybe one other. HD and Kuryakyn carry them.

I, too, am a marine engineer, and you can run a clear tube from the bottom of the tank to the top, it doesn't matter how long or what it's path is, you will get an accurate level reading, but really, do you want to carry gasoline outside of your tank? That will certainly raise the excitement level in case of a collision. (The top of the tube must return to the tank, a closed-end tube is nothing more than an air trap that will never give an accurate reading.) The best idea I've heard, besides replacing the tank with one containing a float, is a cap that has float-and-screw attached to its bottom so the float will sit in the gasoline. Wish I new where to find one.

Why not take an old dipstick, measure from the bottom of the tank to the top of the filler neck, subtract the distance the cap goes down, bend an ell & drill a small whole to attach it to one of the screws in the cap. You still have to pull the cap, but the dipstick would give you a visual reference of your fuel level. Might be better than just trying to look in the tank. Smiley

Sounds like the most logical idea!
Let me/us know if you find one Wink

I would think Suzuki could have come up with that for the Savage/S40. Undecided
