oil drain plug and washer (Read 112 times)

rl153 Serious Thumper Offline S40 Just right! Posts: 906 Bloomfield,CT Gender:	oil drain plug and washer 10/09/09 at 13:05:48 Does it matter which washer you use on the oil drain plug? I just replaced my drain plug with a magnetic one . The washer on the new one is much different and they tell you to change it every time .Is that really necessary ? Should I take the washer off the original drain plug and use that? This seems trivial ,but I'd like to know .Thanks.

I bought 3 when I got the magnetic oil plug & I think Ive changed oil 5 or 6 times since & Im still on the first one..It dont leak, so whats to fix? Huhh, Im askin ya here,, wassa big deal?

California Gender:	Re: oil drain plug and washer Reply #3 - 10/09/09 at 13:47:29 nothing special about that washer the one that comes with the mag plug works great replace when it leaks BTW the threads are very tight fitting, you can almost leave the bolt loose and not leak. So if it does leak, it's going to be minimal replace at next oil change.

I don't know if I had chugged one pabst too many one day and had gotten a little clumsy with removing/replacing the drain plug, but after an oil change this spring I noticed I no longer had a washer next to the drain plug. Like Verslagen said, the threads fit nice & tight. I have not noticed any leakage in that area. Knock on wood. It might not be the case for other LS650 owners, maybe I just got lucky.

I was impressed, no stripping them threads for sure !

Any auto parts store has 12mm gaskets for the oil drain plugs. I use nylon or fiber or aluminum. Copper might be too hard when used with a plug in an aluminum sump.

(By the way, copper work-hardens--it gets harder each time it is re-used. To anneal (soften) copper, heat it red hot and quench it in water...just the opposite of annealing steel.)
