Brake rear brake?
10/09/09 at 09:33:58

So I took the bike to the dealer and had the tires replaced. (Love the new Dunlops!)

Well I was checking the air pressure the other day and noticed something odd. Hope I can describe without photo.

Ordinarily the brake adjustment screw is horizontal with the ground. But since the new tire was put on, it is canted downward (the whole mechanism) from the bolt that holds that piece.
Now I can see gauge markings on the shaft that were covered up before by that part being parallel to the ground.

Questions is - do I need to try and make that straight again, (loosen bolt, move part back, tighten) or is there some reason the tire mechanic moved it to begin with??

I can't visualise how the brake adjuster screw could end up not horizontal as its in line with the horizontal brake cable.

Skat, if it's not like the picture above take it back immediately.
Tell them somethings wrong and fix it.
I suspect that the brake anti rotation slot is not engaged with the swingarm pin.

You would be able to look up in there & SEE IF THE TAB ON THE BRAKE IS IN THE SLOT on the swingarm/ OR you could roll it back & step on the brake, if it keeps rolling,, well, you got the picture.

See this pic - note the canted thingy. I checked Clymers, no info on this (name or position) Does it need fixed back to horizontal?
I see now that it is really the bolt to the swing arm, BUT it was not like that before! And that end bolt adjusts what?

If I am understanding you correctly, the bolt that I believe you are referring to is the belt tension adjusting bolt. It should be straight, it looks like the shop did not adjust the belt after putting the wheel back on.

Now there is a testament to the kind of work these bikes seem to get when they go to a shop. Now, not long ago, someone bought one & it was in the crapper in less than a day & they replaced the motor (IIRC), but it seems these bike get the greenest, wormiest mechanics out there.
What have we seen? One muffler fell off on the way home from having it installed, Seriously, are you KIDDING me? Ive seen at least 2 engines scorched by an idiot installing the filter backwards, Imagine paying shop rates for that kind of "service",,, cough, cough..

Be better off getting together with some friends, cooking up some burgers & working on the bike,,

Yep, belt tensioner
should be in line with swingarm
loosen axle and pull it up
it will fit into a groove
push it forward till it does

you got a way to lift the rear wheel off the ground?
lift it
put the bike in neutral
spin the rear tire by hand
the belt should track in the middle
play with the adjustment alittle and you'll see what i mean
i would check the left side first
adjust the belt tension so you can twist the belt about 90°
then adjust the right one to make it track.
when you got it in the middle
spin the tire in reverse
and adjust the belt so it tracks in the middle that way too.

I would take it back to the dealer and show him,I'm sure he want charge and then the guy who did it will know to do it right the next time.

When you tighten the bolt, it pushes that side of the axle back, i.e. aims the wheel more to the right. The one on the left hand side pushes that side of the axle back, aims the wheel to the left.
That's how you tighten the belt/ align the rear wheel.

Well crud. The dealer is 1 hour away and only open weekdays when I am at work.
Plus that means I have to ride out there with this thing canted like that.
I did ride the bike route and all day last week for our annual ride, plus my usual daily ride to/from work.

Will it hurt anything to ride like that until I get to the shop?  Because I want THEM to fix it - THEY have the bike lift and tools.
