Header flange bolt missing
10/04/09 at 23:49:32
Hey guys first post in this section.
I was bending back the right side footpeg when I looked up and noticed one of the header bolts was missing. It dosen't have an exhaust leak that I can tell.
Should I just go to the dealer and order a bolt and a crush gasket or will it be OK if I just find a bolt at the hardware store and put it on? Also what size bolt would that be? thanks

IMHO Go with the OME parts when it comes to engine's area.

IDK what a stock bolt looks like offhand. Take the one out & go look for a replacement maybe? If you can get one that works, fine, why not? Just get Stainless.
Is the stock bolt stainless there? I cant remember.Seems it wasnt rusty,,& I know it gets hot, & wet & dirty.

I would get one from a dealer and if the exhausts not leaking just put the new bolt in.

Same thing happened to me a few years ago. Rode to Lowes pulled the second bolt, went in and matched it up. Not a problem.

The reason I didn't want to take the other one off is so the crush gasket wont get moved around then it will also need replacement, right.
I'll call the dealer and "maybe just maybe" they'll have one in stock. (fingers crossed)LOL

Best bet is to go to dealer and you with have same bolts on both side and gasket will be ok.

No real worries with the crush gasket. You pull that bolt & dont go messing around, it wont move. Its bolted at the rear, too. Besides, others have pulled the whole exhaust & not replaced the crush & no leaks.

Thanks, called the dealer and they had to order one. Hopefully it will get here by the weekend.

I'm gonna take another look at it.

I'll betcha it's broken off. If so, you're gonna have to take the header off, so you may as well replace the gasket too. But leave the header and muffler as one piece when you remove it - it's easier to line up and shouldn't disrupt the connection between the two.
I've got one broken off right now. Just waiting for a few other parts to come in so I can do several things while the bike is down for repairs.
To remove broken bolt, assuming it's flush with the head, use a Dremel tool with cutoff wheel to scribe a slot into the end of the bolt, then just back it out with a screwdriver.

You can stick a nail in there to see if it broke off.

Update
The header bolt was not broken off. I took the other side off and went to Sears Hardware and found a replacement. It's a stainless steel 8mm x 1.25 X 30 mm. I went ahead and replaced both of them since the other one was rusty. Then I called the dealer and cancelled the order. hehe
Thanks guys for all the suggestions.
