oil usage with chain conversion?
10/04/09 at 21:07:37

If a chain conversion allows you to turn lower RPM's at freeway speed, how much less oil would you use at the lower RPM rate? Anyone with a chain conversion notice a difference?
Also, with a lower RPM , how much longer would the cam chain and tensioner last?

I wouldnt expect any appreciable difference. The drop in RPM with a 17/45 setup is i think 420 RPMS lower than stock. Around the difference between 4th and 5th gear.

...and the chain wear is mostly from big single cylinder power pulses... or torque, on accel/decel...
that would be my guess...

Johnboy,

Many of our issues with the big single about oil usage and so many other things are a function of our right wrist and our changing riding style.

I have watched myself change from a conservative stock rider (with none of these issues) slowly changing over to a performance rider with performance mods and performance habits ...

And durn, I got me some of those performance related problems now.

If I didn't wick it so hard, I wouldn't be using oil -- but I do, so I do.

=========

It is my own durn fault.

And I suspect as I put the years of hard use on the bike it will get worse.

If oil useage ever became a concern to me, I'd say its time to fix it.

Chain conversion runs more effeciently, so I would expect a little better mpg, gas and oil. But I wouldn't expect to hardly notice the difference in oil consumption,.....or cam chain maintenence
