Help me diagnose an oil leak?
10/02/09 at 14:37:01
All...just did the head cap plug fix as it was leaking. Now I have a nice clean head...
But, now I have a leak coming somewhere out of the lower part of the crankcase. I'm having trouble finding the source, because it gets spread all over the bottom of the case just by the wind of driving.
It's not a heavy leak at all, but enough that when I come out the next morning, I have at least one drop on the floor.
Anything down there I can just tighten, to cover the simple stuff without having to tear anything apart.
At this point, since I'm having this much trouble finding it, I'm inclined to just leave it..
This bike is a '96 with a little over 9000 miles on it.

Ok...will do...I noticed a drop on the kickstand spring...does that bolster that thinking?
Is it OK, just to give them a good tightening?

Yes! It's the foot peg bolts. Don't forget to have someone hold the other end on the other side of the bike. (I had the same problem last month).

Hummm....sounded similar to my bike's leak until you said the kickstand side. I suspect mine is at the place the clutch cable goes into the case.

Clutch cable does not enter the case. You may be looking at the speedo cable which does enter the case. It has a long term known issue with a missing "O" ring seal that falls out if the cable is removed. You can replace the seal with a standard "O" ring from a hardware store.
