Bike stalling when put into gear.
09/27/09 at 16:39:38

Hi new member here.  have a 1989 Savage 650 and today I took off the left side controls to clean them and since doing so it stalls as soon as I put it into gear but it runs fine what do you think is the cause? any help would be appreciated.

There are 3 safeties on your bike
clutch, must be pulled to start bike.
kickstand, must be up to be in gear
neutral, see kickstand

Anyway of removing one of the safety so that the bike could start without pulling the clutch in and just with a press of the button?

I too don't like the clutch switch. I try to see a reason for it, as it won't start in gear anyway. I can't see a reason.

I don't like the clutch switch either. I "bypassed"mine by taking a wire terminal meant to slide under a screw & putting it in the plug for the switch, cutting off the excess & putting the end back in the clutch switch. Looks like the switch is still hooked up & easily removed if you want to put it back in operation. Just remember, it will start in gear without pulling the clutch in.

It is almost never wise to bypass a safety, whether you like it or not. The bike will start in gear, if the kickstand is up and the clutch is disengaged. Far better that the bike shuts off when in gear with the kickstand down than that you drive off with the kickstand down, then crash when you attempt to make a left turn. That sort of safety switch is usually the result of somebody getting hurt or killed.

I wondered what the heck that kickstand light was for, since I've never seen it lit up.  Whoever had my bike before me must have bypassed those safety switchs, because I can start it without the clutch pulled in (in neutral that is) and I've never had it die cause I put it in gear with the kickstand down.  Usually I put the kick stand up first anyway.  I guess you learn something new every day huh?

Stick around here Angie, you'll learn things you never even wanted to know.... LOL

BTW, mine doesn't have a kickstand light... as far as I know...

Mine will start in gear with clutch pulled in, as long as the kickstand is up, as Charon said.  Thanks goodness, because on the off-chance that I stall it at a stop sign, I'd hate to have to kick it back into neutral before I could re-start it!
