Unidentified Object in Tool Kit
09/22/09 at 04:55:44

Being as I couldn't get a civilized answer the first time I asked it, I'll try again,.......

There was a solid brass....spring loaded plunger type of thing in my tool kit.
Is it supposed to be part of the kit ?
If so, what is it to be used for ?

Thanks for any straight answers.

I don't have a tool kit with my 87, but I suspect it is to check the belt tension.  However, no one here seems to use it, they twist the belt to see if it is tight enough.

That is as straight as I can get! Wink

There is a tab on the swing arm to set it in & the belt crushes it, depending on belt tension. Consensus is that a belt properly tensioned by that standard is too tight. I know of no one who uses that thing. If you are starting a collection, I could send you mine..

grab the belt on the bottom in the middle between the pulleys and twist. Should twist 90* fairly easily. If it twists more without effort its loose. Less than 90* and its too tight.

As far as that belt tenioner tool goes...keep it in your pocket. The next a$$hole that wont back the he11 up...just take out the tensioner and drop it. It will bounce. The car will back up. Pennys work good too.

Rout,

Most don't use it.  Listen to the Savagista on this one....they are right.

If you insist on using the belt gauge, don't set the belt any tighter than this:

Actually, the gauge should be positioned such that its longitudinal axis is perpendicular to the belt.  Mine is set a little off of the perpendicular in the above photo.

Currently, the belt on my Savage (see signature) is a tad too tight (I can rotate the belt about 85 degrees).  If the gauge in the picture were set perfectly at the perpendicular, it would indicate a bit tighter than it does in the photo.  I figure my slightly over-tight belt cancels out the slight mispositioning of the tension gauge, soooo.....

Bottom line?  Don't use the gauge, set your belt tension via the twist method.  If you insist on using the gauge, set the belt tension no tighter than what you see on the above photo.

YMMV!

Which is worse? Digging up old threads, or having someone ask the same question every couple of months? At least when an old thread resurfaces, it shows that someone either used the SEARCH function or actually read back a few pages.

Sorry....I'd been gone on a business trip (on my Gold Wing - two months and 8500 miles) and was just getting caught up on old threads (I hate to miss a single one as I learn a lot here).

I saw this thread as an opportunity to demonstrate how to properly use the belt gauge to those who do not want to use the twist method.

Ride safe, my friend!

Some business, over 4,000 miles a month in the saddle?
Gonna need some kinda ride report. As long as you didnt have to go thru west tx, it had to be a nice bunch of roads.

Lessee.....

Left CO, then NE, SD, MN, WI, MN, SD, ND, MT, ID, WA, OR, CA, NV, UT, WY, NE, IA, IL, MO, NE, and back home to CO.

Beat a snowstorm home by 12 hours.

Bike ran great, very few of the miles were ridden on interstates, I made some $$, met lots of great people, got to talk to a lot of great kids....it was all good.

BTW, I usually LIKE riding through West Texas!
