Advice - extended range via fuel tank replacement
09/21/09 at 23:15:55

First, let me thank the wealth of humor, humanity and knowledge here.  Smiley  Without trying to sound like a complete Noob, I could use some advice. I need to exend the range of my S40 to around 180-200+ miles per fillup.  Smiley   I have searched this site, and read everything I could pull up under the topic. Very creative and interesting mods, but not one solution that stood apart, except- *insert painful gasp* considering a different motorcycle.  Smiley  100-120 miles per tank (before reserve) is the only beef I have with this fantastic machine, and I would prefer to not surrender it to a need to exend my range. Unfortunately, I am beginning to think that is what will happen. I am taking suggestions on how to keep my S40 and get the range I need, or, a reality check if I am being unrealistic.  Ideally, someone knows of direct replacement tank or an easy crossover part(little or no petckk mods, elecrical, etc). So far, I have not been able to locate one. Thanks for your input. Smiley

You need a 5 gal tank... or bigger.
Yonuh road king is the biggest
seviers is the best looking IMO, but is only 4+ gals.
Then there's the tour tanks, a separate tank attached where it suits you best.

The tourtank site shows one with a black nylon cover that looks good.

Looks more like a luggage bag than a gas tank.  Cool

(Sorry,John_D,just thought I'd mention that Wink

I am so curious,....what so bad about stopping for fuel every 100 miles. I'm always ready to stop long before that.

Maybe its that I am in the much more enjoyable slower time in my life now. It just great to not have to be in a hurry anymore ! Wink

Some guy from this forum (cannot find post) did this w/his stock gas tank. Genius.
Absolutely a GREAT idea and I'm sure any decent bodyshop can do it too.

Thanks for the screamin' fast responses, and very viable alternatives! Smiley  - time to weigh the alternatives.  I really like the explodo-o-tank (wonder how much that holds, and required steering mods), and the add on tanks have great merit. (- limited mods - I have the tail rack already- crank up the shocks?)
I greatly appreciate all your input.  Smiley When researching motorcycles, this community/site  helped swing a large vote towards the S40 - very glad I got it.  Smiley

Routy - Time and event management (or lack of it)- my time is managed by either my copious amounts of offspring, offspring related emergencies,  or high priority, short suspense missions from CINC-Home, except for Sat from 8-9 PM (mostly). and well, doggone it, it seems like every Thursday I end up on the same high bridge escorted by semi belly dumpers in tight formation, when I need that reserve. I am completely amazed at how fast the lil S40 dumps speed during  the Thursday edition of "Hunt for Red's Reserve", punctuated by backfires.... Grin While I can do it without looking down now, but it is getting a bit tired, and I no longer have the irrational need for unscheduled inspections of random grill work. Smiley

Savage Mn, Keep looking for tank alternatives, but think about the bike you would probably buy if you sell the S40. Then go online to find a forum to help you with it. There ain't none! (aren't any, for the grammar sensitive) I hate to tell you, but you have the best bike and we have the best forum for any bike. It's too late--you're hooked.  Welcome.    Boofer

I think the explode-o-tank mod ends up holding
about 5.3 gallons and requires no steering mods,
that gives the savage about 220-250 miles of
autonomy, nice; as I mentioned all the details
were posted here about  2-3 months ago but
cannot recall who posted it, I like that mod best
too. make sure you show us your finished project
whenever its done, C'ya

A little background My winter project was to build a bigger gas tank. I started out with a wrecked tank from ebay and here it is June and I am done.
I am try to decide if I want to get a wrap or get it painted. Does anyone have any experience with a wrap on a tank. Thanks for the input.

My new tank holds 5.3 gals

Here is a couple of pics as the project progressed.
