Trouble filling rear tire
09/13/09 at 12:22:11
Guys: I have a lot of trouble filling my rear tire. My hand pump fits perfectly on the front tire, and I can use that, but it won't fit on the rear. So I drove to the local gas station and used their compressor and I had the same issue...no matter how I bent it it was INCREDIBLY difficult to find a good angle. Also even using my digital pocket pressure gauge was virtually impossible on the back tire.
What is the trick?

position the valve stem on the rear of the wheel. About 1/2 way up makes it easy as can be.

When you replace your tire,... get a tube with a 90' right angle valve stem, and make sure it's put on the brake side of the wheel...

no, pure nitrogen is an inert gas and doesn't react with anything, well, much, the nitrous oxide mix they use for super fast cars is a special compound meant for laughing at the dentist office but,it apparently makes things go boom nice too

Is this a joke or sarcasm? Not trying to be mean or anything, just asking because normal air is 78% nitrogen.
You know if all the other elements leak out quicker after a while you would have tire that are filled with just nitrogen, so why doesn't that seem to work?
I mean 1st fill-up is 78% so the other 22% leaks out so on the 2nd fill up you put 78% of 22% back in of nitrogen so that leaves you with just 3.5% of your tire being something other than nitrogen after inflating it twice.
Makes a nice theory doesn't it.

i had the exact same problem last week! everytime i tried to fill up the rear either @ home or gas station it would shoot out more air then i could get in it!
my friend unscrewed the valve stem, a little wd 40, and had a compressor that clamped on to the stem and worked fine. i want a hand held compressor like he had!!

I have one bicycle floor pump with a head that will just fit in there at one angle. It's the technique. I can't get the digital gauge in, only the stick popup one, and even that at only a couple of angles.
I had a terrible time at first, but now it's no trouble at all. Just technique.
I'm ready for wheels without spokes!

If you have your own air compressor in your garage, you can get just the airchuck for the hose at Lowes, HomeDepot, etc... It's just the air chuck to allow you to put air in with no fancy guage on it or anything. Plenty of room with one of these.

Two suggestions. First I took the old pocket knife to the pump nozzle and just cut it down (plastic) so it'd fit. The second thing I've done is carefully weave the compressor hose up into the wheel spokes and down to the stem. I usually use the second way when I'm out.. (This method also depends on the pump your using....) YRMV...
