Rear brake pedal
09/12/09 at 05:01:21

Is there any way to lower the rear brake pedal? When I ride, the toe of my boot is lower than the pedal and I have to turn my foot out away from the pedal. I have to lift my leg to apply. I think I should be able to keep my toe pointing forward and just push down with my toe? But to do that I would have to lower the pedal about 3-4 inches. I looked for notches, etc to adjust but didn't see any.

You can also un screw it at the back by the brake drum. That will lower the pedal.

There's a bolt underneath that will lower the pedal and hold it down.
And you'll need to adjust the cable in back so there's some freeplay.
And check the brake light switch you don't want the light to be on all the time or not come on at all.

Thanks for this question and answer.  How and where is the brake switch?   My brake light only comes on if you press really hard and I think if I could adjust it then it hopefully will work properly.   My pedal is also up quite high so I will try that adjustment as well.

Thanks Sprout

I finally found the brake light sw. Hey Sprout, the switch runs off it's own cable from the foot pedal and the switch is located just above the place where the brake cable attaches to the bike frame which is just above the muffler guard. It has a spring in between the cable and the switch. Look down behind the swing arm. The pedal looks easy to adjust and probably the switch is also.

That would just lower the point of engagement and give you more travel before the brake does anything.. i.e. slop in the brake action.

Mine was too touchy & I like a tall pedal, so I modded the brake pads..Now its not so touchy.

I got mine done. What a pain on the switch nut. Hard to get at. I couldn't get as much on the pedal because of a bent bolt. Must have happened when the previous owner dumped it. Winter fix for sure. Thanks for the help!

I encountered the same thing on my wife's bike. The boss that the bolt screws into was bent out of proper alignment. I removed the assembly and pounded the bolt boss back into position. It's pretty soft steel, so I didn't have to hit it very hard to straighten it. Easy job to do.

The very idea of pounding the boss back into line just sounds so appealing.

S.S.M. specs:
2.4"/60mm height above the footrest (highest part of footrest to lowest part of pedal)
.8 -1.2" /20-30mm brake pedal free play

"adjust both brake light switches, front and rear,so that brake light will come on just before a pressure is felt when the brake lever is squeezed,or the brake pedal is depressed."

imo if your pedal is too low you lose leverage thus stopping power tho 70% of stopping is on the front brake. i like to be able to lock up the rear if necessary

How can locking it ever increase braking?

it's proof of maximum braking capability
should be adjusted so that it's hard to do though
