Chatter or stack of bowls noise
09/07/09 at 18:50:03
I have a noise that seems to be louder since I have gotten used to riding this bike ('06 S40 Boulevard, 4000 miles with stock muffler) Noise comes on at a steady speed or on acceleration. Not on deceleration. I have even heard it at idle when standing behind the bike. Strange as it may be, the noise seemed much less after about 15 miles of riding. Engine runs and accelerates good, just makes a sound like a chatter or a stack of bowls rattleing on each other when being carried. When standing behind the bike with it ideling, it seemed to come from the exhaust pipe, but can't be sure about that. It does not sound like spark knock or detonation that I have heard before in cars. Could it be from the cam chain? I heard that they are flaky. I don't want that tensioner droping down into the engine. Any help would be appreciated. Dan

New oil change with Mobile 1 20W50 synthetic V-Twin and just had a valve adjustment. Noise does not sound like a click as too loose valves sound. We did the carb enrichment by thinning the white washer. The bike already had the idle mixture screw out about 2 1/2 turns. I found that it actually runs better with the idle screw in to 1 1/2 turns. Thanks, Dan

If it's the cam chain adjuster, put your hand or foot on top of the clutch cover over the oil filter. it will clack right there.

My speedometer rattles om acceleration. I'm planning on fixing it when its too cold to ride. The speedometer mainly rattles on acceleration.

I seem to forget the most simplist of things figuring we've talked about them enough, check this 1st and so on...
speedo
headlight
mirrors
tins
belt covers
pulley cover
dam near everything
When you hear the noise, place your hand on something, not a vice grip, no percussive adjustments, just rest it there and see if the noise changes.
The headlight and speedo make really weird noises and they change depending on their mood.

Did you buy this pad, or just use some rubber stock? What did you use?

if it' clacking both at speed and idle with you off the bike, this eliminates the drive belt. Did you do the valves? If not, did you leave the bike overnight with the folks who did it?

I left the bike overnight with the mechanic that did the valves. He knows to do the adjustment on a cold engine and has done valve adjustments for me before. More than twice. He asked me to ride the bike over to his shop and let him ride it again and listen, so I am. Thanks, Dan
