My rear tire is brand new on the sides and worn flat in the middle lol. Living where we do it is pretty much straight roads so the sides don't get to see much action.

So  I will be investing in some new tires come next season.

Here's the original IRC takeoffs that I dropped off at the shop to have swapped out today. They off my 05 & had about 5650mi on them and as you can see the back is completely worn, whereas the front still has tread, but is dry-rotted extremely bad. I've only put a little over 400mi on the bike and looking at the condition of these tires just scares me  Embarrassed (Will post a comparison of the new ones after I pick them up)

Can't wait to pickup the new ones after work  Grin

I still have the original front tire on my '01 (see signature).  Oddly, it shows almost no dry rot symptoms.  Amazingly, the bike was living in Houston (bad ozone problems - hard on tires) for its first four years of existence.

I wonder why some of the OEM tires dry rot so much sooner than others do?

Here's what EJID's tire looked like:

You might be ahead with cheap tires.

there's aparently been a tax on the cheapy chinese tires. a significant one. In that case Id just as much go with a good tire. My Cheng Shin lasted 6k mi and cost $50 but wouldnt have lasted much more. I opted for the Dunlop 404 for $80. The front Cheng Shin is still just fine but the rear was essentially treadless in the middle.

My stock back tire was a slick at 7500 miles. I had a Metzler 140/90 put on. I changed the front  at about 12000 miles. I still had the stock tire but it had an air leak so I put a Metzler on front. After 4000 miles on the back tire, it looks almost as good as the new front tire. I even went and put Metzler tires on my Suzuki Burgman, very happy with them. I hope that the Feel Free scooter tires last as long as the Marathon 880 tires do.

Here is a good link for general information on motorcycle tires, including how to determine the age of the tire
