Clutch cable snapped. Can I get a step-by-step?
08/30/09 at 10:21:03
So I was about to go to the store and pick up some groceries, when I pulled in the clutch lever to fire up the bike. Clutch cable snapped right at the lever.
I did a forum search for the past year and didn't find quite what I was looking for.
1. Does anyone have a part #for the cable?
2. Is this going to require a tank removal, or can I just feed the line through?
3. The attachment at the lever looks simple enough, (any words of wisdom? common mistakes?)
4. Where the cable attaches to the actual clutch arm- is there a diagram of how to detach/reattach the cable? Don't want to break any of those small parts...
Thanks for all the help. Still have a good month of riding left (at least!) and don't want to miss out over a simple fix. Just haven't done this and want to get it right.

1. Depends on the bars. 03 stock bars CABLE,CLUTCH 508650-001 $19.14
2. If you pull the tank will be an easy job.
3. I attach the bottom, then use a wrench on the clutch arm and have the wife attach the top.
4. Just be gentle. pry it open just enough to get it out.

And of course, I just filled up the tank...

When we had to replace the cable operated remote control mirrors we would tie a heavy string on the old one & pull it thru the dash, then tie that onto the new cable & thread it back thru. Maybe you wouldnt have to pull the tank>?

I tried this with my clutch cable. If its the first time it has been changed (as mine likely was), I doubt this method will work because the cable is wrapped with all the cords with zip ties under the tank. I'd just pull the tank - much simpler.

You got lucky, when I had a similar thing happen it was a part in the trans case that broke and not the cable.
