S40 Surges

Hi, I am new to this forum, but not to motor bikes. I have 4 bikes at present, the latest an'06 Suzuki S40. Others are a Suzuki 200 Dual Sport, a Yamaha 250 V-twin and a Harley Sportster 1200 Custom. Been riding off and on since 1950. That should tell you something about my age. I really like the S40 very much. In fact it is my favorite with the Yamaha V-twin in second place. It took some tuning by my mechanic to get the surge out of the S40. I bought it used with 4000 miles on it. In all the reading on this forum that I have done, I have never seen mentioned anything about surging. Plenty about backfires, but nothing about surging. Anybody out there had a similar experience? I think thats due to an overly lean carb. Easily fixed. Seviersavage I've always thought I would like a 1200 sporty

Surging is generally caused by a lean condition. You need to identify which throttle positions the surging occurred in.

If it's at 1/4-3/4 throttle, it's probably the needle height. You can replace the nylon spacer with a smaller one or several washers. Look for "white spacer" threads in the Tech Section.

How much spacer to remove is dependent upon your local conditions and what modifications you've made to the engine. Generally, 3 washers (slightly more than 1/2 spacer) is considered a good starting point.

If it's at less than 1/4 throttle, try adjusting the idle mixture screw. There's plenty of threads in the Tech Section on how to do that.

With OEM carb, etc. I had a problem [at close to 10,000 miles] of it dying on me when not under load. Now I have lots of surging after installing different carb [with UFO], air filter, muffler. Bike now runs rich.... We have some ideas we are working on [thanks, Lancer] and will report when we get it dialed in.
