Very happy at 50 to 65mph,.... workin' a little at 70, 75mph, may use a bit of oil at that speed... but it will do it, all day if you want it to...
Tops out at about 90mph...
Wink

And with a larger person 90 can only be reached going downhill. LOL

Weigh 215 and I can easily hit 90 on the flat highway.  This has gotta be the first time I would fall into the "not large" category...

Welcome aggie! I would think any speed that gets you from point A to point Z is a good speed.

But seriously I'm in East Texas and with our long rides between cities in the beautiful state of Texas, I've found that both my savage and the wifes s40 eat 10W40, not too much, but taking I20 or I35 at 70-75mph for hours on end makes it loose/eat oil. On our last ride we went 1500 miles to California, but I switched to std. dino based 20W-50. We still rode the usuall 70-75, and we hardly used any oil at all!!!!! AFTER 1500 MILES! Yipeee!!! (went from Full mark to 1/3 from the bottom fill mark)

Give it a try, I'm going to keep watch on it. I'd rather be using Rotella T on a regular basis, but using 1/2 to 1 quart every 1000 miles can be tiring... think about it a 500 mile round trip takes me to Austin and back, I'd leave Tyler with a full sight window, and return below the low level mark!

If I ride the sweet spot, about 60mph, oil consumption is negligible with 10W40 dino and 10W40 Rotella T.

Welcome and PM me if you're in E.Tex

Yep, got a few on you but still love my Savage, runs fast enough for me, and I'm trying to lose weight. LOL

Our flat highways around here have inclines in them also. So I have never really had the bike on a flat highway.

Bought a nice Savage in March 09 after 30 years off bikes. Rode Kaw H1 and H2 Widowmakers (69 & 72). A bit timid on the Savage at first, but felt real good at 55-60. Next thing I know, I'm on good state 4-lane creeping up to 65. Slowly got used to feeling that I was over revving the engine. Now I start out at 55 or so and end up at 70. I need cruise control!! I run mostly on 2-lane county roads and love the curves, but on deserted stretches it will carry my 204 lbs up to 90 on flat. Has used 750ml of Castrol 10w40 Act Evo in 1600 miles. BTW, Clymer and Suzuki book are both wrong on oil quantity for my 8900 mile 01.  My first ever post. Too long? Politically incorrect? Be kind.

Hey, Boofer, I grew up in Mississippi, and for a while I was in the Corinth/Tupelo area.  Where are you at?

I've had no problems running it at 70, with the belt or a chain drive conversion.  After that aerodynamics start to really kick in and it gets harder to get it to go faster, not that the engine can't.  Easiest way to go fast (and get good gas mileage) is to draft a large vehicle (SUV, pickup, truck, RV, ect).
