Maximum rider + passenger weight?
08/14/09 at 17:32:36
Is there a maximum safe weight for rider + passenger? I'm pretty light but I may have to carry someone who's a bit heavier for about 50 miles and want to make sure we're within spec.
What tire psi are you guys aiming for 2 up?
Thanks
A.

I just weight it down till the shocks bottom out, then get stronger shocks.

From my MOM:
Tire Pressure for 1998 Savage:
Solo with light cargo :
Front 200kPa / 2.00kgf-cm2 / 29psi
Rear: 225kPa / 2.25kgf-cm2 / 33psi
Two-up or solo with heavy cargo
Front 200kPa / 2.00kgf-cm2 / 29psi
Rear:
250
kPa /
2.50
kgf-cm2 /
36
psi
And it is stated to
NEVER
exceed the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 785 LBS (355kg)
Hope that helps

my guess is stronger shocks/ adjustable if available.

Look way under the chrome cap on the bottom of the shock. You'll see five notches. The bikes are shipped with the shocks in the #2 position--almost the softest. I use a #2 Phillips screwdriver in the hole to turn the adjuster. Spraying some dry lube on the notches makes them adjust more easily--nothing oily that will hold dirt. For my 200# plus riding gear I like the #3 notch. With a passenger, #4 or #5 will be better. Turning the bottom cap counterclockwise (if memory serves--anyway the harder direction to turn it) puts more preload on the spring so it will carry more weight without bottoming out. If the shocks bottom or top out, the jolt will harm handling.

The max payload on my 2005 Honda GL1800 Gold Wing is 417 lbs.
The max payload on the mighty Savage is 405 lbs.
Amazing!

The max is a safety thing,A ladder is rated at 1/3 its breaking point , My ex gf came home one time and said she put air in the one tire on the car but it still looked like it needed more,I check it she had 90 pounds in it.

Balance plays into things, too. I weigh 170 fully geared up. I put a heavier person behind me and the front end got a little loose. Leaning far forward, things steadied up nicely. I suspect the overall CG plays into handling a good deal!!!!

So should a light person (around 110 lbs) use the #1 position for solo riding?

1 or 2 should do you fine at 110#. Im 180 and set my stock shocks to 4 usually. Sometimes 3. 3 is a bit soft for me I think and 4 a bit stiff. If you want a really nice ride and can pony up the bucks there's tons of info on Progressive shocks. My 412-4005s would fit you well I think. Softer than stock by a long shot. Im stuck on 5 with these but the improvement is quite
shocking
.
Sorry. Couldnt resist.
