Battery Problems
08/09/09 at 09:39:50

Last night, while a little drunk, I went to show my bike to some friends that were over.  I was just going to start it up, but not ride obviously.  My battery was really low, and couldn't turn the engine over.  So, I put it on the charger, but accidentally switched the charger to "start" instead of "charge."  This morning there is batter acid (I think) below the bike on the floor..

My question is: is my battery shot? Or should it be able to hold a charge?

And that is why you don't mess with machines while even a little drunk.

If you do need to get a new one, get a sealed, gel or dry cell. Then you don't have to mess with water levels anymore.

Make sure there is no battery acid on the bike, especially the frame. A friend of mine had to part out a nice BMW one time because battery acid eat through the frame and it couldn't be repaired.

It's battery acid right? I just want to make sure... it smells really bad, and i believe it came out of a clear hose that drains below the bike

Smells bad?  Sulfurous?  Yep, that's the sulfuric acid from the battery on the frame and wiring when you boiled the battery.  Very unlikely that the battery is any good.  If you want to try this battery, you need to refill the spilled acid with more acid, not water.  Then charge at no more than 2 amps with an automatic charger.  Best bet...buy a new battery.  The absorbed glass mat (AGM) lead acid batteries like Big Crank are good, but they'll be ruined by overcharging, freezing, etc. just like a flooded cell lead acid battery.

Even IF you can get that battery to start the bike & get you down the road, I would be ditching it. Its damaged, at best. The gel batteries are dandy. The Big Crank is very dependable. Mine has sat for months & it didnt sound like it was struggling to start. Your battery is just waiting to get you 20 miles from home & not start. They DO that! They are EEEEEEvillll..

I bought a new battery today. A DEKA etx15l.  I will pick it up this week sometime... I figured a new battery will be easier than the headache of my old one.. the bike is a 2001 and it is the stock battery, so it's probably about time for a new one
