Hey guys and gals, just bought an 03 Savage with 4,700 on the clock. I will post pics but I'm going give er a good cleaning tomorrow. Rode her about 50 mi. getting her home this afternoon. A few problems surfaced right away. I've got a broken headlight mount, a small oil leak and the bike cut off on me on the way home. No gas. I put her on prime and she fired back up and ran great the rest of the way home. I did stop and fill er up before she cut off. Cosmetically the bike looks great. She needs a thorough cleaning, no dents or rust. For what I paid for her if I have to turn a few screws I still can't complain. Feels good to be back in the saddle again. Haven't ridden in 4 yrs.

Check the vacuum line for cracks. That is the usual suspect for that particular symptom.

Oil leak, depending on where it is, but I can guess it is right in front of the cylinder which is most likely the infamous oil plug leak which is also easily fixed. (directions in tech/ref section.)

You're right about the oil leak. Its on the right hand side. Are you supposed to tighten head bolts at 5000? If so I'll do 2 jobs at once. I thiught it migt be the petcock diaphram that made it cut off. That's why I put it on prime. Hadn't thought about the vacuum line. I'll roll her out in the sunlight tomorrow and check the vacuum line. Thanks.

No problem, and you are supposed to according to some tighten headbolts at 600 miles, so yeah, go ahead and kill two birds with one stone, especially since one of the head bolts is under the plug I mentioned. Just throw some RTV on the plug after you tighten the head bolt and put it back in and you will have fixed that particular problem.

When you pull the vac line to check it, make sure there is no gas in the vac line, if there is, then you do have a faulty petcock, if not, it is more than likely just the vac line itself. They are notorious for getting cracks on the ends causing a vac leak.

Is it possible that your fuel level just hit reserve? You would have the same symptom as you describe. On the Savage it's your wake-up call to buy some gasoline! Wink

So it's possible that the petcock and vacuum line are okay.

When I opened the gas cap at the guy's house I couldn't see any gas so I rode about 5 mi. and filled er up. After that I rode another 7 or 8 mi. and she cut off twice. The second time I switched to prime and rode the rest of the way home no problem. I'm gonna check the vacuum line out here in a little while and I'll get back.

Paid $2000. I been sneeking around on this forum for a month. I knew I was gonna have to do some work, the bike is cosmetically great. For a bike with less than 5000 mi. I don't think I'm hurting. I'm going to richen up the idle jet and torque the headbolts and put some sealer on that plug cap and I think she'll be ready to rock n roll.

You were right about the vacuum line. Aimed a flashlight at the petcock and the vacuum line was almost tore into. The whole end of the nipple on the petcock was exposed. I don't see how I made it as far as I did before she cut off. Easy enough fix. A whole lot easier than rebuilding the petcock. My headlight housing (bellhousing) was cracked in two places. Ordered a new one from the dealer while ago. cost $98, ouch. I pulled the brass plug over the idle jet and came out 1.5 turns on it. That's enough for today. I'll see what I can get into tomorrow.

Too bad about the headlight. If you had posted here the marketplace, you might have found one someone was dumping. Either that or ebay. Other suppliers have good prices on stuff too. Dealer is usually DEAD LAST option with me. Mine is outrageously priced and always has to order anyway.

But you're right I sould have posted headlight wanted. I hope the bell housing and a battery is all the money I have to spend. If that's the case I will be happy moneywise. Still got a few more screws to turn. No hurry, the dealership said it would take 6 or 7 days to get the headlight housing in. I'm thinking about getting a piece of maybe one eighth rubber or waterproof foam and cut it to fit underneath the headlight bracket where it mounts to the forks. Looks like long term vibration caused the cracks at the top of the bracket where it joins the bell. Has anyone ever tried this? I'm thinking it might help prevent future cracks.
