Thinking of Bobbing...
07/27/09 at 06:28:37

I've been thinking about slimming the Savage down since I picked it up last April... My girlfriend took her MSF course and passed, and over the weekend picked up her own bike (A Ninja 250)...

So, now that she won't need to be riding with me anymore, I'm pretty sure that I want to chop or bob the bike (I'm still not 100% sure which is which).

Thoughts or suggestions from anyone? If anyone has some decent pics of their bikes before or after, I'd like to see them as well.

I'm looking for something with just a seat for me, minimal rear fender. It still needs to be street legal and able to pass PA inspections though.

I just reversed mine from a hacked up bobber to a full on bike. The only thing I'm still missing is a set of real shocks rather than these spiked struts.

Here's the thread of mine before and after.

Whichever you choose, have fun with it there are lots of suggestions floating around this board no matter what you decide to do.  Cheesy

good thinking ! i love bobbers as well! my girl loves riding and is thinking of gettin her own, when she does my entire rear fender is coming off.

there are some awesome examples of bobbers on here and if i'm correct

bobber=if it doesn't need it to run, toss it on a stock frame

chopper=almost the same idea but extended rake on the forks

my bike is kind of rat roddish and a little bobber @ the same time, it's still a work in progress but it's getting there. basically flat black everything i can, header wrap, make the exhaust look rattty by removing chrome bracket and i ground off all the paint on the tank with a wire wheel. there's much more to do but i'm having a blast so far. have fun make it yours and show em what "a girl's bike" can do!! ahahhahhaaa

i've flat black'd the horn and turn signals and little things since these pics but u get the idea ! oh yeah i also removed the sissy bar(which has HUGE perks btw!)

'95 bobber rat...i guess it's a "bat bike" haha flat black mostly, bare metal tank, header wrap, always a work in progress !

Yeah - I'll keep scouring the forums to see what I can find for examples... I'm excited though! It should be a pretty fun project to tackle. Smiley

Before

Present and still not finished

Back seat and sissy bar are still on because of my daughter. Keeping saddlebags because it is my primary transportation to and from work.

Couple ideas for ya.

Just take everything off that isn't needed to run. Demin bike is a great example.

And,since I wrecked the '86 over the winter I'm redoing it as I'm riding it.A little mix.Hint custom Savage tank, will probably only pick up a quart or so of fuel, but it'll look cool.Stock rear fender:all holes filled, reinforcment welded on the inside so I can stil have a passenger(she'll just hafta hold on Wink)Front fender painted that can be installed in case of rain. And of course metalflake paint.

I saw Demin's when I searched the boards... Of course, probably my favorite of all that I've seen.

What are the specs on that rear fender?

Not sure how crazy I plan on going... I'll probably keep the springs for at least now, but that's always up for change I guess. Smiley

The fender is a trailer fender. From Northern tool.Part # 1363 I think.About 27 bucks.Cut 12" off of it.The fender on the second bike is the piece I cut off of the first fender.

I just posted an easy/cheap bobber build in the tech section: http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1248802832

Before:

After:

The changes have been ongoing for about a year now as I ride it pretty regularly, but the main bobbing of the fender I basically did in a weekend. That only cost a little over $50 to do because I used rattle cans and got things like the turn signals and taillight for cheap at auto parts stores. The great thing is all the lights are legit too because they are DOT approved trailer parts. And the trailer fender - thats why shes nicknamed "trailer trash"  Tongue
