I've got the rear wheel off to change the tire and I thought I'd clean up and re-grease the pivots on the rear brake. Does anyone have a good trick for removing the brake shoe springs? I tried a brake spring pliers I had in the tool chest for cars, but no workee on the Savage. TIA!

You need a #3 or bigger Phillips headed screwdriver. Hook the end of the spring into the slot part of the Phillips and lever the spring end out and over the post.

Or you can grab it with some vise grips and pull real hard ....
(SPRANG !!!! Where did that durn spring take off to ???)

Same trick works even better to put the spring back on. The Phillips tip gap will self center on the post while carrying the curved part of the spring end over the post. Gives you the leverage you need to do the job.

(amazing what sorts of outdated antique sorts of knowledge sticks around inside your brain -- drum brakes and this particular Phillips screwdriver trick used to be a dirt common sorta thing)

Old,

I tried your trick with the #3 Phillips screwdriver....it didn't work for me, I must have been doing something wrong.

So I made a special tool that would expand the shoes enough so that I could remove them from the brake housing. It is then easy to get the springs out.

I used a length of 1/4" all-thread, a 1/4" washer, three 1/4" nuts, and two fairly stout 1/4" fender washers. As you can see, I bent the fender washers:

Here is what the tool looks like when it is in position. All I have to do is turn the nut on the left and the shoes expand. It works great!

Then you can just disconect the springs without worrying about them shooting across the garage/shop. Install in the reverse order. That's how I did mine and no trouble what so ever.

Works pretty good, too. Just make sure you know where your fingers are, because it is possible to get pinched.

Yeah, you just fold em off the pivots. Easy. Don't make it complicated.

Good point, keep your fingers clear and yes, the backing plate is a more accurate description of where the shoes are attached.

OK, I get it!

I post a question a few days ago, desperately seeking an easy way to perform a task. Only Oldfeller extends me the courtesy of an answer, but I can't get his way to work.

So, I spend over an hour of precious shop time fabricating a tool that will do the job. I'm so proud of my accomplishment that I post it for all to see. Embarrassed

Well, then, the "help" starts oozing out of the woodwork. It's almost as if the dudes with the answers said to themselves, "Let's let Digger twist in the wind a bit...maybe he'll even come up with some ridiculous solution to his problem and give us all a laugh."

You guys are like blisters....you show up after the work is done!

Seriously, thanks for posting this easy and quick method, Yonuh.
