2009 S40 front brake won't stop squeaking!
07/12/09 at 22:19:44
My wifes S40 now has a little over 1000 miles. Recently we did go on a dirt road for less than a mile. Other than that I can't think of why they are squealling all the sudden. They weren't making noise when it was brand new. I changed the oil at 600 miles. Anyhow, does anyone know how to quite down squeaky brakes?

If I remember right the stock brakes are pretty common to squeak. I and others have since switch to other brands such as EBC and I haven't noticed another squeak since.

I don't know if it is what they are made out of or what, I just know mine were like that as well. I got new ones and put a lot more miles on them and now they are quiet.

You could try brake cleaner.
my front brakes squeaked if i touched them lightly, so I picked up a $2 can of brake cleaner and sprayed it down. solved the problem with relative ease.
not really sure if i should have done that though....

If it's an '09, it is likely still under warranty. Take it back to the dealer and gripe. If he says "They all do that" ask for the phone number for the area representative. I will personally testify my '07 does NOT squeak, and it has OEM pads. And I live on a dirt road, so it gets driven in the dirt.

Dirt road help the brakes from squeaking because it keeps the pads ruff.

So, a small box of dirt with a screen in the bottom, to keep the pads "dusted" might be the answer! Just gotta hose clamp it to the fork..

There may be a bit of grit caught in the pads. Might have to remove the wheel to get it out.
And back when I had stock pads... they would squeal when they were loaded up with brake dust. Just wash with soap and water to desqueal it.

Is it a bad idea to spray the pads and rotors with brake cleaner ,without taking them off the bike? Thanks

No clue. I did, but i have a bad habit of jumping into things without paying attention to details
.... nothing bad has happened yet.
I sprayed the brakes and rotor, let it sit for a few seconds, then sprayed it again. I wiped it off best I could and went riding on it. Felt a little slippy the first times I squeezed the brakes, but that could have been my imagination. works just fine now, and I like to lay on those front brakes

Thanks for all the imput guys. Think I'll try the soap and water thing first and if that don't work I'll try the brake cleaner. I'll ask my local shop if I need to remove the pads before cleaning. Thanks again.

I never removed the pads for the soap and water
and I wouldn't remove for brake cleaner either.
but both are going to be we and need to be dried out for best performance. Don't need to do stoppies, just some easy braking. you'll know when they're dry.
