Question on Belt Adjustment
07/12/09 at 14:42:27
I just bought a 95 Savage and think the belt needs some adjustment. It makes quite a racket! Don't have the adjustment tool referred to in the manual, but do have a belt tension tool that you use on a Harley belt. It measures the deflection. Has anyone used this tool and do you know how much deflection should be in the belt? Thanks.

The tool you need is the one god gave you.
Reach down with your hand and grab the middle of the lower belt.
And twist it.
If you can go 90° with it, it's good to go.
You mentioned it's making noise, why? probably cause it's out of alignment.
easy way to align,
lift the rear wheel off the ground
now turn the wheel by hand (take it out of gear)
where does the belt ride? on the lip of the pulley?
needs adjusting
Loosen the locknut on the adjuster and turn the adjuster bolt untill the belt rides in the center.
Got it? ok repeat turning the wheel in the opposite direction.
Now that pulley rides on a bearing and rubber dampers. If either are worn out you might have trouble getting the adjust right.
And remember to check your belt tension again.

Thanks for the info. We checked the alignment and then decided to take off the drive pulley... it's toast! Have any idea where to get a new one?

The inside teeth are ground down to little nubs. The noise that I was hearing was all the play in the pulley. I'm not sure you can fix it...
