Weird throttle acceleration response
07/08/09 at 13:01:41

...well not exactly the throttle I dont think?  I did not know where to start looking for the issue yesterday and was going to write in about it today, but it seems to be solved (for now).

Yesterday the throttle was turned and held as usual, but there was no corresponding increase in power, not like usual anyway.  I had no pick-up; not the usual leap forward.

Situation was first gear, throttling up for 2nd, but had very sluggish reponse. Same thing in second, very slow and never quite up to speed.  I rarely go to third on my way to work. This happened all day yesterday during several rides.

It did not matter if I had the choke in or not - same response.

Today it started to do the same thing. Then, as I was holding the throttle at one postion, first gear, the bike lurched forward and gained speed.  All torq back, now speeding up in normal quick response.  The lurch was enough to snap my head back a little.

so...did i have something stuck in the fuel line? Or a bad tank of gas?  Huh  Is this going to happen again?

Add a couple of ounces of seafoam in the tank and call me in the morning...

Most likely sticky slide.  The throttle is not directly attached to the carb.  You twist the grip and a butterfly valve opens.  This increases the vacuum which pull open the slide in the carb.  When this slide opens, YEEEHA! you go!  Now when the slide is sticking a bit, it can make that wild stallion into an old grey mare.  You can add carb cleaner to your fuel or open up the top of the carb and manually clean the slide.

You might also check for a "dry sticking" throttle cable. With the engine off, drop down on your knee on the right side of the bike and peek in there on the front side of the carb where the throttle cable attaches. Turn your throttle and watch for a real slow or delayed action. If when you turn your throttle the action is delayed and then lets go after a second or two, you have a dry sticking throttle cable.

If the cable is sticky, seems all that would do is make it fall to idle slowly. The cable is attached to the twistgrip & when the grip turns, the carb knows it. The cable doesnt lift the slide, vacuum does that, a sticky slide will cause a failure to accelerate & can cause a slow drop to idle.
Putting a hand down to the left, on the part the idle adjust is on will allow the rider to twist the grip & FEEL THE CARB OPEN & CLOSE( drat! Caplox, sorry), Anyway Skat, you can trouble shoot the cable out real quick, but my $$ is on the slide.

LOL - yes, just 4 miles if I take the LONG way to work! Usually just 3 miles otherwise, all secondary roads.  Cool

If you are going to take the carb off to do anything, clean the whole thing.
Sorry for the interuption of this post. They came to Xray some of my body parts.
Get some protective goggles and blue nitryle gloves and use a good carb cleaner to clean every passage and jet and the seat for the float valve. Possibly even a new float valve kit.
If the engine had been running well before this problem began, then I would not suspect a wrong adjustment of anything. I would suspect
very small debris or varnish buildup from time to be your primary problem.

What are the odds she could walk into a shop & just tell a mechanic she wants someone to school her on going thru a carb & find some kind hearted fellow who would be willing to do it?  Hell, I aint any kinda cute & I bet I could get away with it. A 12 pack or a meal or a few bucks can sure get attention.
If no one is willing to actually come & help, maybe they'd let you bring the carb to them so they can have their tools & stuff handy. You might get a hands on school, cleaned up carb, new friend,,
