Dyna Muffler Question
07/01/09 at 11:42:27

I've been considering changing out my stock muffler on my 07 S40 for the Harley Dyna muffler replacement being sold on ebay. The ad says re-jetting is not necessary as this muffler is baffled.  Has anyone had any experience with this?  I don't hate my stock muffler enough to risk screwing up my bike by installing this replacement.

Better check who that ebay seller is first. If it is flightsimshop or his alias kwikbay, DO NOT buy from him, he is a cheat. Ask anyone here on this forum.

Be real careful that you get the right Harley muffler.  There are many, and the right one will fit up to your Savage brackets with no modifications and will require no welding.  Be sure you get the Harley clamp with it.

When I got mine, it was a simple bolt up with no welding required, and doesn't leak.  I did the re-jet and free flow air filter at the same time.

DO NOT buy from Kwik Bay or Flightsimshop.

If your jetting is currently stock,.. and I'm guessing that you are close to sea level.... a rejet is probably a good idea.

you will need to rejet to get the most out of your bike with a dyna muffler on it.
When my bike was stock i topped out at about 86 MPH.. With the dyna i top out at 72 MPH or so and the throttle gives a blaaaaaaaaaa response when i give it more.
In my case i had to replace my muffler because it rusted through. But, the dyna sounds really good and the bike is great in city or up to 65 mph..
Also the dyna is baffled but not as much as the stock muffler which is why it works but requires a rejet to make it perfect.

I recently put a HD muffler on my thumper.  I had already done the white spacer mod and removed the brass plug over the adjuster screw.  I merely had to readjust the idle screw a little.  Mine runs just fine, no more backfires and I am pretty close to sea level myself.

That is just my $0.02 worth.

I made the mistake before knowing better by buying one from flightsimshop and I can't for the life of me figure out how to hook it up without bending the frame because the bolt hole is in the wrong spot and the bracket doesn't even close to line up. Besides that, the cuff doesn't fit around the Dyna slip on that he sold me.

Does anyone have any advice of where to get one that will work? I am about to put the original on and I really don't want to do that! :'(

We always want to re-jet.

This chart is an excellent starting point.  With a couple of common hand tools and a $4 main jet your bike will run better.

Go to a Harley shop and talk to the parts guy. Ask him/her if they have any take offs. You may be able to pick one up for very little.

Does yours say Harley 883 or 1200 muffler on it?  If so it's the right one.
They do require a little fitment to work,... not a direct bolt on replacement.

I looked at my HD muffler and the only numbers I could find on it were 64941-01. Maybe you can cross reference that to exact model and year.  I bought it 2 years ago from Ebay but I don't remember who the seller was.  Like I said before, it bolted right up to my '96 Savage without alteration, however you must use a Harley clamp.  The clamp came with it as well as shim stock for fitting tightly to the Savage header pipe.  The Savage heat shield fit right over it.  No alterations, no welding, no leaks.

Thanks everyone for the great response!  The ebay ad I looked at was from flightsimshop and I appreciate the warning about this seller. Like I said in my original post, I can live with the stock muffler until the bike gets a little older and I'm more willing to modify it.

It was a 50/50 shot... Only one of a pair has a federal compliance statement indicating it is for a Harley 883 or 1200....

I've got a HD exhaust off of a Dyna Super Glide. There's two sets of numbers on it:
64941-01          - I think this is the part number
HARFXD1450     - I think this says Dyna Super Glide

The previous owner installed it along with a new set of jets. I'm pretty sure the jets are optional.

Got a SE slash cut brand new for $25 on ebay. Whatever you end up getting make sure its a rail mount. That will make installation easier. Go ahead and get a jet kit from lancer too. Its about $20 and well worth it. You may not NEED to do any carb work but for best results I would. Depends on the baffling. The SE has very little so I HAD to rejet.
