Mini Explosion in the Exhaust
07/01/09 at 10:27:46

This usually happens when:
- I'm in 5th and releasing the throttle
- turn off the bike

There is like a small explosion in the exhaust.

Why does that happen?

Is it bad?

It's saying thank you,... You'll get used to it..
Big thumpers are famous for it.
Savage is king of the thumper backfire Grin

You can tone it down if you want to mess with the carb a bit.

Everybody calls it a backfire, but technically it is an "afterfire"...
Backfires are back, through the carb...
Nobody call them afterfires though,... it doesn't sound as cool... Grin

I used to have this eliminator 1000 that I had removed the collector thing and I got a 4 into 1 fitted on it. It had massively unequal length header pipes and when I shut the throttle at speed, it would seriously sound like an AK47 was being fired. Stacatto gun shots like rat a tat a aaa tat a tat tat aaa tat tat tat. It was ocassionaly accompanied by flames out the pipe - Awesome.
Cool.

I just pulled up to the house where a couple of guys were working on the lawn. Turned the ignition off, and the bike passed gas as usual. Looked over and smiled at them. Just a little fart, kind of the way you feel after eating a fine Mexican meal.

I've had 8 Harlerys years ago and we use to snap the throttle closed and retard the spark at the same time and watch the flame come out of the mufflers.  kinda sounded like a 12 gauge high brass.

I have come to enjoy being able to do that when I choose hehe. Some of my cycling friends like it too. Use it to make those ladies or gents look toward you! Think of the old advertising motto,"Any advertising is good advertising".

However to stop the backfire on shut down I have found that you generally just have to let it idle for about 15-30 seconds before shutting it off  and that tones it down enormously if not totally stopping it.
