Cylinder head Trimdown

I was just wondering how much I can shave off the cylinder head to increase compresion without the piston hitting the valves.  Roll Eyes

I had my head shaved 0.015" and the cyl 0.025" for a total of 0.040".
Will find out shortly how it goes. Undecided

I sugest putting in Wisecos 96mm piston instead. You will not only gain 30cc, but the piston has a raised crown that will increase compression.
I not only have more power now but I have noticed that around where I live, there are certain slow down points where I close the throttle to slow for a speed zone. Now when I do it the machine slows in less distance.  I take this to be evidence of higher compression.
BTW the crown is raised nearly an 8th of an inch. That is more than you can wisely shave from the head.
BTW The wiseco piston is pocketed to provide clearance for the valves.

Phelonius, any other changes needed besides piston and wrist pins?
Do you have specs on the compression increase?

I do not have any specs except to note that in operation there is definate indication of increase in  compression.
I contacted Wiseco on the phone for some other question and they were very helpful. I am sure they would answer your question.

so was that a standard Wiseco 2mm over for the savage or was this for something else?  I didn't know they domed the replacement pistons for this bike... Huh

The dome was likely for the benefit of the DR650 folks who go racing in the dirt.  We luck out as a by product, and it is better than shaving metal.

Lancer, are you running this piston on yours right now?  If so are you doing a shave in addition to the dome?

No, don't have the piston.  The reason I shaved instead was that my cyl has the silicone carbide treatment and I did not have the bucks to  rebore and retreat plus buy a new piston ( about $350 total ) but instead spent $45 for the head and cyl shave.

Wisecos' 96mm piston fits both the OLD style DRs and the Savage S-40s.
The word dome is not quite correct. The top of thepiston is raised visible for nearly its' whole diameter, leaving enough at the edge to not hit the head on TDC. The crown of the piston is notched to allow the valves to recess into it. This still makes for considerable metal reaching higher than a stock piston. This has to raise compression as will the extra ccs of displacement.

Should have it ready to fire up in a few days.  Gotta get it going quick, Verslagen is flying out for the Dragon Ride and we need two running bikes for it.   Smiley

It really makes me want one.  I got an old '87 model last week from Dave in N Ga. for just $200.  All of the components are there but I believe the engine is going to need a tear down...we shall see.
