Best performance mods?
06/06/09 at 00:44:50

I'm new to the S40 and trying to get an idea of the best performance mods available for the bike. Searching through some posts it seems like the Supertrapp exhaust and some sort of carb mod is pretty popular.

What do you think are the best ones for the money?

depends on what you're looking for. Top 0-60? Top speed? Top mpg?

What's your budget?

Best mods?...better tires like Pirelli MT66 Route, and a fork brace, plus a better seat.

Whole lot more power?...you got the wrong bike--buy one with a bigger engine.

Modestly more power?...Carb transplant & SuperTrapp

Even more power but lots more work?  Lancer's cam.

36 or 38mm vm carb with UFO and Dial A Jet. Get a free flowing aftermarket exhaust. And dont get a cheap one like I did lol. Despite a tiny leak, my bike runs amazing. UFO adds 1-2 more horses per CC and dial a jet really opened up my top end. There is noticeably more top end with the dial a jet. My bike runs amazing at highway speeds.

Handling before power. As stated above, tires & fork brace.

Get it breathing better. You want ALL it has to offer? Supertrapp.
You want more power, better sound, classier look? IMO, Dyna muffler.
If you want all it has to offer, stick a cam in, when its time for a cam chain.
If you feel like doing the work to coax every fraction out, there are guys here who will help.
On a side note, I found 2 places yesterday with dynos!  One is real close & reasonable enough. $35 for the first pull, $25 for the next & $10 after that, for as long as you like. He said he would tell me what to do to tune the carb/exhaust & I could do the work. Or he would do it, for $75.00 / hr... errrm, no thanks..

The LS650 is like the VW Bug of the bike world, both in terms of the ease to mod it and cost to mod it.

What's your experience level?  Do you ride mostly downtown with stoplights?  Open country roads and highways?  Half and half?

Read, read and read.  Read just about anything you can find about not only modding this bike, but all bikes and even car engines.  Everything directly or indirectly translates.  Read specifically about intake dynamics, carb function/jetting and exhaust characteristics.  Plan mods you can undo if needed.  Then don't be afraid to try.  Most of my performance mods I've done on this bike have been half truly understanding what I was doing, half a mix of experimenting and feedback from this forum and a pinch of confidence.

Thanks for all the info. I'll definitely check out all the suggestions. I created this post because I'm trying to decide if I want to set it up as more of a city rider or open road bike....just trying to get a sense of what is possible.

Concerning handling...a fork brace was mentioned. Any other successful chassis mods that you've done to stiffen the frame, improve suspension, etc?

thanks for the tips! Smiley

Sopme change the fork oil. Replacing the shocks with taller & better shocks is a win, win. You get a better steering angle, more ground clearance & a better ride.

hi, j_o_g, is there a particular taller shock that interchanges? theres a swap meet coming in few weeks, there is usually lots of hd take offs, predominately shocks and carbs.

You can get Progressives at a stock hieght or 1" - 2" inch over, if you're willing to spend the cash.
Also, Suzuki Intruder shocks are an easy swap and 2" taller.  That's what I have.

BIG piston and valve relief job.  Convert to chain to get the best advantage in final drive ratios.
