Ever since my first, 44 bikes ago, I have lived with morning clank.
This is the sound of the first time I put the bike in gear with a cold engine.
In days of old when all bikes were kick started, there was no choice but to live with it. Because of old habits, this has continued on through 44 years of riding.
About a week ago I had a brain faart. it told me that after warming the engine a minute or so, turn it off and then put the bike in low gear and re start it holding the clutch.
This allows the grabby cold clutch discs to part from each other quietly.

That solves the problem of the "clank." Another tried and true technique is to put the bike in gear, squeeze the clutch, and push the bike forward and backward until the clutch releases. Then go through the normal starting drill.

Done that, used to do it with kick start bikes. Electric starting in gear does a better job. It is that doing so dead cold is hard on the starter so I warm it and shut it off before putting in gear and re starting. With the thumb button kill switch it only take a second and since the engine has then already been run, it fires up with one revolution.
BTW I have ownedf 4 BMWS over the years and still own an R100R.
My 6 Hasrleys were dry clutch as were both my Motoguzzis and both my Russian bikes. My triumph 650 TT racer and my 500 thumper Matchless were semi dry clutch, but now I ride S-40 .

My Savage (see signature) is not too bad in this respect. However, my KLRs are horrible "clankers" if they've been sitting awhile.

What I do is hold the clutch in and give the throttle a few decent, short blips. This breaks the clutch pack loose and I can now shift into first without any undue drama.

Luckily I have a downhill driveway so I can match speed as I'm shifting into 1st. So there's just a little "chug" instead of a clank.
