? on helmet differences
06/01/09 at 23:21:05

my girlfriend needs a helmet, and i have a question about them.

if they are DOT or SNELL or both approved, what is the difference between a $600 shoei or a $150 scorpion?

is it the name? just the brand? or is there something else? if they are both pass the test specs what is the difference? because for $600 i can put a whole lotta gas in the savage!! lol

"If you got a $150 head,.... buy a $150 helmet".....
I actually have a $10 head.... Huh

Really?.... have her try them on...
Different companies helmets have different shapes.
Beyond that,.... I find Shoei's comfortable, but heavy...
Scorpion's and HJC's, are a bargain, and very good....

Main thing, try them on.  And then try on others,... and then try them on again...
Wink

and if you think she's pretty,.... buy her a full-face....
and I know you do......

Not having owned very many helmets, I can't give a real definitive answer, but design, fit, finish, etc. might be some of the differences.  I know my $300+ Arai Profile is the most comfy FF I've ever tried on.  Of course I've got an odd shaped melon apparantly. Roll Eyes

Plus I'm sure you are paying some for the name.

Edit: serowbot beat me to the post, but raised a point that was the reason I picked the lid I did.  It's shape is a longer oval, as opposed to the more round shape the standard helmet has.  Most of them either dug into my forehead, or if not that, were too loose on the sides.

A helmet that fits "Just right" right now will be loose in a month.
The High Dollar helmets dont save yer life any better than the $140.00 flip face HJC.( IIRC thats about what I paid)
The flip face or full face comes highly recommended. I like the flip, because I wear glasses. I stuck my face in the back of the drivers cab corner on a small pickup. A regular helmet would have left me hurt seriously or dead.

Rocco -

And, in addition to what others have said - get her a brightly colored helmet that can be SEEN and attracts drivers' attention.

I still don't understand why riders wear black jackets and black helmets, then complain when a driver doesn't see them.  My jacket is bumble bee yellow and my helmet is candy apple red.

I think their all pretty equal in a small crash,But if your head is sitting on the other side of the road price makes no difference. You do pay for name in high price helmets,Get one thats fits like you like, and you like the looks,I alway buy white cooler and shows up.

i knew it had to be the name! the salesman @ cycle gear said the higher priced helmets have more research into them, that's all. and he was cool and admitted u do pay for a name!

i wear a full face, and def want her to have one(i think she's GORGEOUS and would like 2 keep it that way!) so we're looking into some of the scorpions or seven zero seven's that are mildly bright. and luckily she's not a "butterfly and pink" girl, she found a sick ass one with a dragon on it that looked like my tat....not a mystery y we're 2gether!

and speaking of black on black on black, my helmet is grey and black, my bike is black and my jacket is black grey red and reflective so that helps but the 3rd set of LED accent lights came in today so i'm puttin them up 2nite after sparring, and of course i'll put pics up!!

and yes that's a WHAT WOULD CHUCK NORRIS DO? tshirt!

Gloves, dont forget gloves..
complete coverage footwear, cover that ankle bone.
Someone posted some pics of a gal who got blown off her B/F's crotch rocket at high speed. The skin grafts looked like hell.
