Engine cut off while riding

I bought an 04 Savage just over a month ago and have been riding it every other day, save the past week because of all the rain. So today I start her up and ride through town for about 4 miles before heading off to the highway to cruise around. After about 9 miles on the highway, at about 70mph, she slips down two gears and cuts off. I tried to start her back up while coasting but didn't work, so I pulled over and tried again but it just turned over quickly and wouldn't start with wot nor choke. Waited ten minutes, still wouldn't start. Waited another ten and put it on prime for a couple of seconds, she started up as normal and I got home just fine. Can anyone tell me what happened? The bike has cut off once before while riding, but after filling up with gas it hasn't happened again. This time theres plenty of gas.

putting her on prime cured it, there's your clue... the vac line to the petcock is your first culprit to eyeball... the factory one is cheapo cheesy.... id pull and inspect the vac line, if that showed no dice, id check the diaphram in the petcock.... if no obvious culprit showed by then, id be looking at the petcock strainer....fuel starvation without a doubt...

The petcock is pretty sensitive to leaks. A little crack will cause it to turn off. Or loose ends. Tye wrap or use hose clamps to secure the hose if it's even alittle bit loose. You'll notice it 1st going up a long uphill grade where you are running close to WOT cause vacuum is minimum at this time.

also, you need to check the hose for gas. The petcock diapham tends to go bad after a few years leaking gas into your intake. If it gets bad enough, it can leak into your engine and into the crankcase. If you ride with gas mixed into your oil you can ruin the engine quite quickly.

So something to add to your monthly check out.

Many folks around here on this board have done the swap and according to them, yes, the Raptor is a direct swap with the Savage petcock. It is an on-off-reserve petcock unlike the Savage which is Prime-on-reserve.

Use the search function, type in Raptor Petcock and set it to all posts and you should get a truck load of hits.

I personally do not use it because I went with a Road King tank so I am using the Harley petcock. But there is very good results reported on the Raptor.

It is a direct and easy bolt on. Take the old one off and put the new one on. Nothing more to it.

That's what I installed at the suggestion of this board and I couldn't be happier. I like having control (for sure) of my fuel. Just remember to plug the vacume line on your stock carb.

Thanks marshall and verslagen for the leads. I have to wait until my boyfriend gets home because he likes to do all the dirty work. He thinks that it could also be that I am low on fuel, but I have about a quarter tank and it wouldn't start on reserve either. Does anyone else think that low fuel is part of the problem? How low have you run your bike without any problems?
