removing the float pivot pin (carburetor)
05/24/09 at 19:58:04
Hi, I'm disassembling my savage carburetor for the first time and I can't remove the float pivot pin... I try with WD-40, pushing the pin with a screw driver, pulling it with a plier... I would have tried to use a flat screwdriver as a lever between the pin’s head and the carburetor, but there is not enough space... The only other way I can think of is involving using a hammer and I really don't feel it's a good idea starting hammering the carburetor...
I suppose there must be an easier way to remove that darn pin... any ideas?

i think you could clamp both pin support posts between a vice with soft jaws and drive the pin out with a proper size drift and hammer. that might eliminate the danger of breaking off one of the posts. you might need some sort of shim to avoid clamping in the pin area. if i recall the posts are tapered and it should not be a problem. i have not tried that technique myself as it just came to mind after reading your post.

I just took that pin out a couple of days ago and I used an awl and a rubber mallet.

Have you heard of a thing called a punch???
They make punches that are very small (the diameter of the float pin and smaller). I would go out and borrow one if you don't have one, or even buy one. Seeing that they are usefull for more than just your carb, i'm sure you could find something else to use it with.
A few small taps with a hammer on top of the punch would knock that pin right out of place. very safe and effective.
good luck

a proper sized punch, a small deep socket, and a c-clamp would make a near stress-free pin removal rig(jbweld would be useful at reducing the number of hands required to get it set up).... a clever cat could file a piece of aluminum to a profile that would support both "ears" while tapping the pin free.... a really bright type could combine both ideas into a single tool.... take a look at an ak-47 windage adjustment tool.....

just take a wee screw driver ( like them little eye glass repair kits have) and hammer and tap it gently. A couple taps will knock it right out. Done it a dozen times or more while rejetting. Worked every time with no issues.
