almost made it...
05/24/09 at 17:40:10

well i decided a few weeks ago that i wanted to try and paint my s40, i had gotten it used and white was really never my color so i started taking it apart

i got to about here and said "hey that looks pretty darn cool" (yep talking to myself again) and decided that there was no way the stock fender was going back on and while i was at it...

figured why not change the fender, brake light, rear turn signals, seat, mirrors, put on some exhaust wrap, and make the chrome look like brushed aluminum...oh yeah, and i painted it too Cool...now just waiting for a couple black star decals, an american flag decal, and do some changes to the front end and i'm good to go...what do you guys think?...my gf is an iraq vet and we do alot of patriot guard and cvma rides so i figured i'd do something special in honor of her and the other troops making it safe for people like me to do stuff like this...too bad i missed my memorial day deadline...

Clad you stop taking it apart when you did or there would be nothing left. Nice job.

Very nice.  Did a similar look with my M50 last year.

How about one of these?

yeah, i'll probably go for a solo seat like that at some point but for the meantime i'm probably gonna try to trim down the seat that's on it now and recover it in camo gore-tex but the fork boots will definately be next (any idea what size those ones are?)...i kinda like the off-road kinda look i've got going on, kind of a mini-urban assault vehicle haha...just gotta figure out where to mount the rifle and bullets...

Your seat cover will fade.  I was looking for someone to make me a leather seat cover for my M50 to match the saddlebags.  While looking I made an OD green seat cover using the original seat cover as a pattern.  Within two weeks it completely faded to a tan.  Each day it got just a little lighter.  I dyed it OD green mixed with black hoping it would fade to a light OD green but still faded to tan within two weeks.  Tried the UV sprays as well.

I found someone to make me a leather seat cover but ended up selling the bike before I had one made.  The UV treatments work better for more indirect sunlight.

wow, i bow to the ultimate uav haha that thing is sick...thanks for the info on the seat, was kinda hoping that since it was gonna be made from a military issue rain jacket that it'd stand up a little better but i guess after seeing some of her equipment i shouldn't be all that surprised...what did you replace that bike with?

One day last summer, I walked past my wife's S40 in the garage.  I noticed a smudge on the tank.  I rubbed the tank three times and poof!  The mod genie was let loose.

When the smoke cleared, this was sitting in my garage:

Did you paint it at home?  Looks dang good.  What other details you got planned?

Here are some more pics at various stages.  Something in them might trigger some do or don't ideas for you.

Yep.  The patch rests on the right shoulder of both dad's and my uniform.

The stock muffler is so clunky looking. A Dyna muffler looks loads better.

Love what you did with the bike RJ8. Can you explain a little bit what you did with the rear fender?

I would definitely keep messing with seat ideas, call me crazy but the stock exhaust looks kind of appropriate for the bike in my opinion.

Also, big thanks to all our servicemen/women.

The way you made the chrome look like brushed aluminum.  Nice touch.
